Penn State Scandal: Mike McQueary Changing Story Will Cripple Prosecution's Case
Mike McQueary is doing himself and the alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky a huge disservice by changing his story at this point in the investigations.
McQueary was the graduate assistant who apparently saw Sandusky in March of 2002 having anal intercourse with a 10-year-old boy in the Penn State Nittany Lions’ showers.
His account of that day was recorded in the grand jury report on Sandusky and it makes no mention of him attempting to stop the horrific act or inform the police about what he saw.
McQueary made a mistake firing off an e-mail to friends (which was later leaked, perhaps intentionally) on Nov. 8 saying that he did exactly those two things. What looks like a blatant public relations move is going to hurt the prosecutions case and won’t even help the man save face at this point.
McQueary is a key witness and will be under oath when Sandusky is on trial to testify against him and about what he saw that night.
Sandusky, who by all means should have retained one of the top defense lawyers in the state by now, is going to catch a break when his defense is able to pick apart holes and contradictions that are now appearing everywhere in McQueary’s story.
How can the graduate assistant’s testimony be taken seriously by a jury if he said he called his father and told Joe Paterno after leaving immediately, but once public opinion swayed against him, changed his story to one of him telling police and stopping the rape?
Penn State police are already releasing statements saying that they have absolutely no records to support McQueary’s claim that he spoke with them following the incident.
They do have records from a 1998 case involving a mother upset that her young child showered with Sandusky and therefore aren’t hiding anything from anyone at the PSU or State College police departments.
We will have to wait until the trial to find out what exactly happened when the man testifies under oath against his former defensive coordinator.
But I can tell you this much, if Jerry Sandusky even has one charge dropped because of McQueary’s greedy, selfish move to change his story, there will be blood on McQueary’s hands.
