Mike McQueary: How Changing Testimony Could Free Jerry Sandusky

Alex KayNov 16, 2011

Mike McQueary has made another foolish mistake.

He did something so foolish that it could theoretically help Jerry Sandusky clear himself of some charges. He appears to have contradicted his sworn testimony to the grand jury in an attempt to try and help his image.

First, McQueary testified to the grand jury about an incident he saw in 2002. Here is what he told them.

"

[McQueary] saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be ten years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant was shocked but noticed that both Victim 2 and Sandusky saw him. The graduate assistant left immediately, distraught. The graduate assistant went to his office and called his father, reporting to him what he had seen.

"

McQueary was smeared in the media for not doing enough to stop the alleged rape as it was happening and failing to report it to the police.

Now he is trying to clean up his image by selfishly backtracking on his sworn testimony, giving a modified account of his actions on and after that fateful March day over nine years ago.

McQueary fired off an e-mail that said he "did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police.”

He also said of the rape, "I did stop it, not physically, but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room."

A key component of the public backlash against McQueary is the belief that he did not report what he'd witnessed to law enforcement.

The grand jury found McQueary's testimony to be very credible and is using it as key material to prosecute the former defensive coordinator.

Sandusky’s legal team is going to have a field day now, discrediting everything McQueary has said that conflicts with his sworn testimony.

What on earth was McQueary thinking?

No one is going to respect him anymore now that he is pretty blatantly trying to save face by saying he did stop it and did talk with the police.

He will never work in college football again, and has a tarnished reputation because of his sworn grand jury testimony.

Going back on it now is just stupid, and could hurt the case against Sandusky.
