Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: What This Fight Could Mean for Boxing
Though it might seem like the fight won't be coming to fruition anytime soon, it is still a question asked by almost any serious boxing fan and even some casual ones.
What would the fight do for boxing?
Most hardcore fans believe it would help the sport.
But it won't.
It is the biggest fight that boxing could make, but that actually hinders it instead of helping it.
Imagine the fight is like a rubber-band. If the fight got made it would start stretching.
Mayweather and Pacquiao would get into full media mode and Mayweather would start doing the same childish antics he always has to do to sell fights. It isn't needed in a fight of this magnitude, but he'll do it anyway.
And the fans will hate him for it to the point where most want to see him lose no matter what. Some will even hate the fight if the outcome is anything less than a Mayweather loss.
And the hype would stretch a little farther.
The coverage and build-up for the fight would be insane. The fighters would end up on all the late night shows and be constantly discussed in a myriad of sports shows and radio programs.
And each one of them would hype the fight and make it sound like it would be boxing's best for the year.
And the hype would stretch a little farther.
After watching the third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, it seems obvious that Pacquiao has a problem with counter-punchers who wait for their opponent to strike first. That means Pacquiao is going to have trouble with Mayweather if they did meet.
No matter if Pacquiao could win the fight or not, it wouldn't be an interesting affair. It would end up being like every other Mayweather fight which, though impressive, isn't much fun to watch.
And with that all of the build-up and tension made from the fight would turn into backlash. All of a sudden the casual fans who tuned in would mention how even on boxing's top level, fighters are afraid to fight.
They would mention how the fight was boring and the undercard didn't give them anything. They would complain about how much they spent on the fight and how if this was boxing's best they wouldn't order another fight.
And in the end that is what a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would give boxing. Another bloated fight full of hot air that would be exciting and meaningful for die-hard fans, but one that will only injure the sport even more.
Because like always, boxing will deliver a great event, but only after making fans think it will be incredible.
