Penn State Scandal: Jerry Sandusky Defense Going Nowhere with Public
I may need to get bandaged soon for excessive scratching of the head. No, there is no dandruff here, just a perplexed individual trying to figure out the defense that is seeping from the depths of Jerry Sandusky and his legal counsel.
What we know and what actually occurred are of course two fluid entities. The only things we have to go on are the grand jury report and the he said, he said of a few men embroiled in this mess.
What I can't understand is what Sandusky plans to make as far as his arguments. Right now there are likely millions of people that want to see him in prison without hearing his side of the story.
The last thing he needed was to make his voice and thoughts known to the masses. With a trial pending, he went on Rock Center with Brian Williams and dug himself a huge hole.
His lawyer Joe Amendola encouraged the venture. As many have heard by now. Sandusky had to actually grapple with the question of whether he was sexually attracted to young boys.
The fact that he needed some clarification must have sent chills down all listening in to the interview. So, what's next for the defense? Where do we expect them to go to now?
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Amendola disputes that the 2002 rape that coach Mike McQueary happened upon ever happened.
The lawyer is confident they have the boy, now a grown man, and that he disputes a rape ever occurred. From the report:
"Amendola said that Sandusky alerted the boy a day or two later that Penn State officials might ask him about the incident. The former coach encouraged the child to tell the truth, his attorney maintained.
Amendola said that the university has known the boy's identity from the beginning, though it never bothered to contact him. (Prosecutors said last week that the boy's identity remained unknown.)
"
If this particular boy disputes the heinous crime ever occurred, Sandusky still has a huge battle in proving that the plethora of other alleged victims were never molested.
The report cites what is at the heart of the assumed defense. Amendola was quoted as saying:
"When you take it apart complaint by complaint, we have answers for each one of those. In two or three - or even perhaps four of those - the allegation is that Jerry put his hand on a boy's knee . . . got a shower with them, or gave them a bear hug - which, I might add, doesn't involve criminal activity.
"
This is a man on trial for the most sordid crimes and they are starting their defense by letting everyone that wants to know that, yes, Sandusky did shower and touch these boys. The fact that there is a but never had sex with them will hardly register with the masses.
Sandusky may have a longtime to consider what he did in prison if this is going to be the defense he goes with.
