Week 11 Waiver Wire Pickups: Which Breakout WRs Are Worth Adding?

Zachary D. RymerNov 16, 2011

Every week, there are at least a handful of wide receivers that burst onto the scene and rack up fantasy points like I rack up donuts at the grocery store.

This would be great, but the problem is that very few people tend to actually benefit from these breakout performances. Breakout wide receivers are all well and good, but they are rarely owned at the time of their breakouts.

All you can do is pick them up after the fact and hope they didn't set aside a year's worth of production for one week. It's a hit-and-miss game.

Concerning the wide receivers who broke out in Week 10, why don't we discuss which ones will be hits and which ones will be misses?

Vincent Brown, San Diego Chargers

Chargers rookie Vincent Brown filled in for Malcom Floyd on Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders, and he filled in for him quite nicely. Brown ended the day with five grabs for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Brown's production in and of itself would have been enough for me to be convinced. But when you factor in Floyd's finicky health and the fact that Brown had a second touchdown overturned on a dumb replay call, it's hard not to get excited about him.

Besides, Philip Rivers may not be so quick to go to Vincent Jackson after he mysteriously gave up on a pass that resulted in an interception. Somebody has to catch the ball, and maybe he'll figure that somebody is Brown.

Verdict: Hit

Harry Douglas, Atlanta Falcons

When it comes to Atlanta wide receivers, it's all about Roddy White and Julio Jones.

Except for when Jones is injured, which is starting to become a trend in his rookie season. He had to leave Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints with a hamstring injury, and Douglas filled in for him and caught eight passes for 133 yards.

If Jones is deemed to be healthy, you're wasting your time with Douglas. If Jones has to miss some time, Douglas is worth it.

For now, I'd be proactive.

Verdict: Hit

Damian Williams, Tennessee Titans

Ever since Kenny Britt went down, assessing Tennessee's wide receiver corps has been a lot like shopping at a yard sale. There's a lot there, but not much worth your time.

Damian Williams is challenging this notion. He had a touchdown grab last week, and he had a touchdown grab in Week 10 as well. He also added 107 receiving yards, the bulk of which came on a pair of 43-yard receptions.

Meanwhile, Nate Washington has been a disappointment in each of the last two weeks. Looks like there might be a changing of the guard in Nashville.

Verdict: Hit

Laurent Robinson, Dallas Cowboys

I feel like I'm writing about Laurent Robinson in waiver wire articles every week. The dude refuses to go away, and that basically means that you people aren't picking him up.

If you haven't, please do so. Robinson has four touchdown grabs in his last three games, and he's going to see plenty of action as long as Miles Austin is out with a bad hammy.

If Robinson is still on the waiver wire next week, I'm coming to your house and making the move for you. Then I'm steeling all your booze.

Verdict: Hit

Denarius Moore, Oakland Raiders

Denarius Moore is a true feast or famine player. The rookie has had two great games this season, but has been just okay in most of the others.

That said, you had to like what you saw between Moore and Carson Palmer against the Chargers on Thursday. Palmer found him for two deep touchdowns, and we all remember that nifty fingertip grab he made.

Traditionally, the Raiders love the deep ball. With Jacoby Ford injured and Darrius Heyward-Bey suddenly transparent, it looks like Moore's the man to go get the deep ones.

Verdict: Hit

Interesting. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever been able to avoid being negative about at least one guy. I consider that to be a good sign.
