Jerry Sandusky Interview: Joe Amendola Ruins Defense with Sandusky Interview
There is not one single piece of the Jerry Sandusky scandal that makes any sense, including how he is being defended.
I can't understand how a man can be that allegedly evil. I can't understand how so many people could let something like this possibly continue to happen. On Monday, my confusion continued.
Jerry Sandusky was featured in a frightening interview with Bob Costas on Rock Center with Brian Williams. By the end of the interview, any last bit of doubt that I had was dried up as Sandusky grappled with the question, "Are you sexually attracted to little boys?"
If that weren't strange enough, consider that the interview shouldn't have even happened. Costas was just as surprised as we all were that Sandusky would be available by phone interview.
The New York Times reports Sandusky's lawyer was already supposed to feature on the news show in an interview with Costas. It is that reason that Costas was slightly prepared when Amendola leaned over and dropped this bomb. "What if I could get Sandusky on the phone?"
That is the point that I imagine that Costas thought to himself, what the hell is this guy thinking, or there is no way this will end well for Sandusky's defense. After a moment to reflect, Costas must have answered with amazing jubilation.
The interview went on with Sandusky becoming the story, and not his lawyer that was supposed to be the featured guest initially.
At some point, Amendola pulled an audible that he thought would work to sway viewers. It was an awful mistake that must be viewed as one of the classic blunders of all time.
There may have been one percent of you that thought, "well, what if this guy is innocent?" That small modicum of doubt was most likely washed away all because this lawyer not only decided to let his defendant speak, but coached him in the most lackluster way.
Sandusky sounded ill-prepared for the interview. He stumbled over questions and failed to answer an insanely easy question about sexual attraction.
He was painted as a monster and the delivery by phone only served to make the interview all the more creepy. If there is one thing this interview accomplished, it's that Sandusky is even more vile than he seemed before.
Somehow, I think that is not what Amendola had in mind.
