Notre Dame Football: Where Does Michael Floyd Rank Among 2012 NFL Draft WRs?

Randy ChambersNov 15, 2011

Although Notre Dame has been experiencing a down year by their standards, it's hard to blame the failures on wide receiver Michael Floyd. He is the top wide receiver in Notre Dame history and has 77 receptions for 922 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

He is only a junior, but he will probably leave school early since he is guaranteed to be a first round pick in this years NFL draft.

Floyd has a lot of positives to his game, such as his 6'3", 224 pound frame and how he's able to get physical with defenders. He tracks the ball very well and has strong hands to be able to go up and get the football. He is also good at taking advantage of his big frame and sustaining a block.

Like every player, there are also negatives to his game as well. Due to Floyd's size, he isn't a quick wide receiver and he won't outrun many NFL defensive backs. He also needs to work a little bit on his route running.

The main concern I have with Floyd is that he has been arrested several times for alcohol related charges. We have seen this several times where players can't seem to stay out of trouble and it may shy a few teams away from him regardless of his talent.

I have Floyd as the No.3 receiver in this draft behind only Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon and South Carolina's Alshon Jeffery.

Both of those receivers are NFL ready and are very similar in there style of play. Both have great size and hands and are deadly after the catch. Jefferey needs to improve his blocking skills and Blackmon has ran into a little bit of trouble himself.

The reason Floyd is below Jeffery and Blackmon isn't a knock on Floyd, it's that the other two are just that good.

All three of these wide receivers should have very successful NFL careers wherever they end up.

The 2012 draft class is extremely deep with talented wide receivers as I could put at least six in the top 50 overall players in this years draft. Michael Floyd is one of the top at the position and will go inside the Top 20.
