Jerry Sandusky Interview: Bob Costas' Questioning Crushes Sandusky's Credibility

Mike ChiariNov 15, 2011

While it isn't as if many believed the innocence of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, but his interview with Bob Costas on Rock Center most certainly didn't do his case any favors.

Sandusky, who has been charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse against children, proclaimed his innocence in the interview and said he was not a pedophile. Despite his insistence, allegations against him have rocked the very foundation of Penn State University, including the firing of legendary head football coach Joe Paterno.

In the interview, Sandusky went on to explain he had showered with young boys and had inappropriate contact, but he insisted he did not have sexual interest or involvement with any of the alleged victims.

"

"I am innocent of those charges," the 67-year-old Sandusky said. "... I could say that I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them, and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact."

"

It would be irresponsible to declare Sandusky guilty or innocent at this point ahead of a proper trial, but this particular interview didn't do him any favors. I'm not sure why his legal team thought it was a good idea, but Sandusky certainly seemed to dig himself into a deeper hole.

Sandusky claimed he didn't sexually assault the boys, but admitting to showering with them kills his credibility. Showering with young boys certainly isn't protocol for a normal and responsible adult, so with that knowledge now out in the open, it will be hard for the jury to ignore it.

He may not have admitted his guilt, but it's hard to fathom anyone can possibly believe his claim of innocence after hearing what he did admit to. Perhaps this was a desperation tactic by Sandusky and his legal team, but it most certainly didn't land with the public.

I don't think anyone believed Sandusky to be innocent before and that certainly hasn't changed. It may have been worth the risk from his standpoint, but his accounts of what he did with the boys coupled with his eerie tone is not going to be endearing to anyone.

Sandusky most certainly has a right to tell his side of the story, and he did that in his interview with Costas. All things considered, you have to wonder if continued silence would have done him a lot more good than speaking out.
