Jerry Sandusky Interview: Why This Was a Monstrous Mistake
According to Jerry Sandusky's Rock Center interview with Bob Costas on NBC, Sandusky "should not have showered with those kids."
He said so himself. Well, thanks, Jerry. That wasn't obvious.
Quite frankly, Sandusky's interview is an embarrassment—an embarrassment to himself, Penn State and every alleged victim involved.
Sandusky has two options. Talk and admit, what seems like, obvious guilt. Or, keep his mouth shut completely. Instead, Sandusky went on national television claiming multiple eyewitnesses and multiple alleged victims are telling bald-faced lies. Their allegations are simply not true.
Denying the charges adds insult to injury for all parties involved. Sandusky further damages his horrific public reputation. Penn State continues to sink with a dying ship. And the alleged victims get drug further through the muck, being displayed as liars by their alleged abuser.
We are not talking about an isolated incident. We are talking about allegations dating back to 1994. We are talking about eyewitnesses able to recall specific images of specific acts. There are many alleged victims, with an unknown amount still lurking in the shadows of Sandusky's questionable past.
All of those people against Sandusky. Regardless of guilt or innocence, did he really expect a phone interview to change the public's perception?
Sandusky's former employer, Penn State, cannot be happy. Its former defensive coordinator is an accused pedophile. Its iconic former head coach is nothing more than a glorified Penn State cheerleader.
At this point, Penn State is trying to wash its hands of this debacle. Wipe the slate clean and start fresh. Sandusky's claims of innocence further complicate the situation, and the emotions involved.
Public perspective is the name of the game. In the United States' judicial system, perpetrators are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, guilt in the eyes of the American people is just as damning in moral and ethical situations.
Yes, these are allegations. Yes, things may not be as cut-and-dry as they seem. Either way, Sandusky and Penn State have been crucified on a national stage.
His guilt seems apparent. In the public forum, his guilt is all but decided.
Jerry, take what's coming to you. Be a man. Tell the truth, and don't make a bigger mockery out of the most horrendous scandal in sports history.
