Jerry Sandusky Interview: Why NBC Interview Will Prove Coach's Guilt
An interview between former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and Bob Costas will air tonight at 10 p.m. ET on NBC News' "Rock Center," with Sandusky facing charges of sexually abusing young boys.
Sandusky, who is facing 40 counts allegedly tracing back to 1994, has been under siege since he was arrested on Nov. 5.
In 2002, current receivers coach Mike McQueary (now placed on administrative leave) allegedly saw Sandusky sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy in one of Penn State's locker room showers.
But Sandusky, who has declared his innocence, didn't do himself or the other coaches any favors in his interview with Costas.
Said Sandusky, via MSNBC:
""I could say that I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact."
"
When pressed by Costas, Sandusky conceded, "I shouldn't have showered with those kids."
By admitting he showered with the alleged victims, Sandusky automatically puts himself in a corner. That in itself is extremely inappropriate, especially the part about touching their legs. Since when is touching a 10-year-old boy's legs in a shower a perfectly normal thing to do?
Sandusky told Costas he's not a pedophile, but touching young boys' legs in showers certainly points him in that direction.
It's possible that Sandusky is thinking about what McQueary is going to say if he is ordered to stand as a witness. The grand jury report already has placed McQueary at the scene of one of the alleged crimes. Perhaps by claiming he was in the shower with the boy but nothing sexual happened Sandusky defends himself against a guilty verdict.
But, given his interview with Costas, Sandusky probably would have been better served not saying anything.
He only increased speculation of his guilt with his words.
