BCS Rankings: Arkansas and Georgia Might Be the Wild Cards in All of This
The BCS title race is as clear as it can be at this point in the season, with two automatic qualifying teams remaining undefeated. LSU is the front runner in the race, as they were voted a unanimous No. 1 by both the Coaches Poll and AP Poll.
LSU holds the key to a lot of the turmoil that could unfold in the BCS this season, as they still have Arkansas and the SEC title game left on the schedule. Those two games could play fits with the system assuming that there is a possible LSU loss in the future.
With all of the scenarios that are swirling around the title game, two teams hold a large portion of the season’s possible finish at bay. Those teams are Georgia and Arkansas.
Not many people are discussing the Bulldogs and the Razorbacks when the BCS title comes up, but both teams have a huge role that they can play moving towards the end of the season.
Both teams will face off against the LSU Tigers before the close of the regular season, and both teams are playing very good football as the season draws to a close.
The Razorbacks
Arkansas faces LSU on Nov. 25 for the last game of the regular season. Just last season, Arkansas was able to knock off the Tigers despite being the underdog in the contest.
This season could bring the same results if the LSU Tigers are caught looking forward before the season draws to a close.
Arkansas has only one loss this year, coming at the hands of Alabama, and they have a wealth of talent offensively that will challenge the very talented LSU defense.
Arkansas will enter the game believing they can win, and there is a very real chance that it could happen.
If Arkansas pulls off the victory to close the season, not only will they have beaten the No. 1 team in the country, but the top-10 Razorbacks may garner enough respect to jump in the standings and become a contender for the BCS title game.
As unlikely as it seems for the Razorbacks to find their way to New Orleans, there is a chance if they earn a victory over the Tigers.
The Bulldogs
Assuming that LSU could make it through the remainder of the regular season spotless, they will face off against the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.
Georgia started the season with two losses, but the Bulldogs have bounced back with eight straight wins and the SEC Eastern Division title.
LSU has one of the best defenses in the country hands down, but one area where the Tigers can be beat is through the air.
The Tigers have a very talented secondary, but its drive for big plays can find players out of position at times, allowing for success through the air if a talented signal-caller can find the holes. Georgia has one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC in Aaron Murray, making the future contest a must watch.
If Georgia can pull out a victory over LSU, not only would they win the SEC title, but they would also muddy the now clear picture to the BCS title game.
What Wins Could Do for the Title Hunt
An Arkansas win over LSU would do a few things for the BCS standings. It would push Alabama to the top two and place them in the SEC championship game.
At first glance, that looks like a losing scenario for the Razorbacks, but a loss for Alabama in the title game could maneuver the Razorbacks to New Orleans in January. As unlikely of a scenario as it may seem, it is a very real possibility.
Arkansas’ most likely finish if they win would be in the Sugar Bowl and not the BCS title game, but the scenario is plausible.
The most confusion is likely to come if Georgia beats an undefeated LSU in the SEC title game. Then, you will have a wealth of options for the BCS title game, leading to more turmoil than most would like.
Georgia is too far removed from the top 10 to be considered a title contender, but they could end the hopes of their conference foe.
