College Basketball Predictions: Picking All-ACC Preseason First and Second Teams
North Carolina is No. 1 in the AP and ESPN/USA Today coaches polls.
Duke has started the 2011-12 season ranked No. 6 in the opening ballots.
And that's it, no other Atlantic Coast Conference teams have started the new season in the top 25.
I'm not sure when the last time was that the ACC didn't have at least one or two other teams in the preseason rankings.
With all of this in mind, here are the first and second preseason All-ACC teams.
Second Team: Dorian Finney-Smith (Virginia Tech)
1 of 10Dorian Finney-Smith is a five-star recruit that could be the next great Virginia Tech Hokie.
The 6'7" freshman SF can do it all.
He can score inside or out, break down opponents off the dribble and clean the glass with the best inside players in the conference.
In his Hokie debut against East Tennessee State, Finney-Smith scored 10 points, pulled down 16 rebounds, handed out five assists and blocked four shots.
Keep an eye on DF-S.
Second Team: Michael Snaer (Florida State)
2 of 10Junior Seminole guard Michael Snaer is one of the best on-ball defenders in the ACC.
Because of Snaer's leadership, Florida State will again be one of the best defensive teams in the country.
Up until now, he has not been a primary offensive weapon, but this year may be different.
In FSU's opening game of the 2011-12 season against Jacksonville, Snaer scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out three assists.
Second Team: Mike Scott (Virginia)
3 of 10Mike Scott might be the best front-court player in the conference who doesn't go to school in Chapel Hill.
Scott, a 6'8", 242-pound forward, averaged 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds in 10 games of what was supposed to be his senior year at Virginia.
After being granted a medical hardship waiver after sitting out two-thirds of last season with a left ankle injury, Scott is ready to lead the Cavaliers to their first NCAA tournament bid since 2006-07.
In the Cavaliers opening game against South Carolina State, Scott scored eight points and pulled down 15 rebounds in 24 minutes.
Second Team: Malcolm Grant (Miami)
4 of 10Malcolm Grant is a fantastic combo guard who averaged 14.8 points and 3.2 assists last season.
An outstanding shooter, Grant led the conference in 2011-12 in free throw percentage, 85.3 percent, and three-pointers made per game, with 2.6.
He was a third-team All-ACC selection last year and is ready to help the Hurricanes make a push to jump into the league's upper third.
In the Hurricanes 2011-12 opener, Grant scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Second Team: Kendall Marshall (North Carolina)
5 of 10Kendall Marshall is a classic pass-first PG that changed the course of North Carolina's 2010-11 season when he was inserted into the Tar Heels starting lineup.
Last season, Marshall was a first-team freshman All-American by The Sporting News and a second-team selection by the United States Basketball Writers Association. He was also a third-team All-ACC and ACC All-Freshman team selection.
He led the ACC and all freshmen nationally in assists and was ninth among all players.
After UNC's first two games, Marshall is averaging six points and ten assists.
First Team: Seth Curry (Duke)
6 of 10Seth Curry is the best three-point shooter in the ACC.
He was No. 2 in the conference last year, shooting 44.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Curry is Duke's highest returning scorer from the 2010-11 Blue Devils.
So far this season, Curry is averaging 13 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.5 apg, and is shooting a sizzling six-for-nine (66.7 percent) from three-point range.
First Team: Austin Rivers (Duke)
7 of 10Austin Rivers is one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country.
Last year, Rivers was selected as the Naismith, Parade and USA Today National Prep Player of the Year award winner and was a McDonald's All-American.
He is an elite-level penetrator and has NBA three-point range.
In the first two games of the 2011-12 season, Rivers is the Blue Devils' leading scorer (15.5 ppg) and leads the team in steals (2.5 spg).
First Team: Tyler Zeller (North Carolina)
8 of 10Tyler Zeller is one of the best pure centers in the country.
Zeller not only has the size at 7' and 250 pounds, but also has exceptional post skills on both ends of the court.
While he gets his share of dunks, Zeller has an array of hook shots and drop-step moves that he effectively uses to score.
He led the ACC in field goal percentage in all games (.547) and ACC games (.580).
Zeller was the Tar Heels' leading scorer (15.7 ppg) last year, out-scoring Harrison Barnes by one point.
In UNC's first two games this season, Zeller is averaging 18 points and seven rebounds.
Excellent also in the classroom, Zeller won the 2011 Skip Prosser Award as the ACC's top scholar-athlete in men's basketball and was named to the ACC's All-Academic team for the third year in a row.
First Team: John Henson (North Carolina)
9 of 10John Henson is becoming one of the elite PFs in the nation.
Last year, he was the ACC defensive player of the year, blocking an ACC-best 118 shots. Going into this season, Henson has blocked 178 shots in 73 games (2.4 per game), fourth in UNC history.
In 2010-11, Henson averaged 11.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
He has already started off this season well, averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds and 5.5 blocks in the Tar Heels' opening two games.
First Team: Harrison Barnes (North Carolina)
10 of 10Harrison Barnes will be the ACC Player of the Year in 2011-12.
Last year, Barnes was the ACC rookie of the year and was selected as a freshman All-American. He was also named to the All-ACC Second Team.
He averaged 15.7 points and 5.8 rebounds on the season, including an average of 21 points in NCAA tournament and average of 24.7 points in ACC Tournament.
Barnes has an excellent mid-range game, with a killer pull-up jumper.
In a different lineup, Barnes' rebounding numbers would probably be better, but when you play alongside Henson and Zeller, it's tough to grab many boards.
Barnes, in the Tar Heels' first two games, is averaging 17 points and five rebounds per game.
