Jerry Sandusky: Vandalizing Former Penn State Coach's Home Won't Solve Anything

Ryan RudnanskyNov 13, 2011

It's natural to retaliate when someone has been charged with something so heinous.

But after former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was charged with sexual abuse involving young boys, throwing cinder blocks through his windows isn't going to solve anything, either.

That's what reportedly happened on Thursday night, when two cinder blocks went sailing through the first-floor bedroom window at Sandusky's house.

Next-door neighbor Paul Kletchka was just getting to sleep when he heard a crash.

Said Kletchka, via the Philadelphia Inquirer:

"

"We have two small children, and we're concerned for the safety of everyone in the neighborhood. We ask for people to give him his day in court. We understand that people are angry, and we understand why they are angry, but bringing violence to this neighborhood isn't going to help anything."

"

Keep in mind that Sandusky's home borders Lemont Elementary School in College Township. By becoming violent, that only makes the area more unsafe for the children people have risen up to protect after the allegations concerning Sandusky.

On a broader scale, however, it also doesn't help Penn State change its culture. We can only heal by moving forward, not looking back at the past.

People are right to be furious. It's hard not to be. But we need to start thinking about how this nation can rise after such a tragedy.

We can't do that by throwing cinder blocks through windows and vandalizing local neighborhoods.

Penn State used to be known as one of the most prestigious institutions in America, a place students were proud to go to school.

But by rioting or putting innocent children at risk, it only hurts a reeling community even more.
