Manny Pacquiao: Why Marquez Trilogy Hurt Pac-Man's Legacy

Kyle VassaloNov 13, 2011

Manny Pacquiao won by majority decision last night in a controversial fight that concluded the Marquez trilogy—a series of fights that will ultimately harm Pacquiao's incredible legacy.

Juan Manuel Marquez won the fight in the ring and lost the fight on the scorecard last night. Pacquiao vs. Marquez was filled with controversy coming into the last fight, after a pair of close finishes left some angered that Marquez didn't win outright.

Last night was by far the most controversial though. Watching the fight, it appeared to most viewers as though Marquez was out-boxing Pacquiao throughout the fight.

Some will contend that Pacquiao won the fight, but the fact the fact that he couldn't destroy a 38-year-old Marquez this time around takes away from the argument that he is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the entire world.

He's had three cracks at taking down Marquez and hasn't done so in resounding fashion in the slightest. At best, he barely won a fight against a guy on the back end of a decent career.

Is that indicative of a guy whose prowess is unparalleled in the boxing world?

All eyes now turn to Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Many believed the elusive dream fight would feature two evenly-matched fighters duking it out for the right to be called the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Pacquiao went into the ring with a chance to close the book on this trilogy and prove that Marquez was grossly outclassed. He failed to do so, and now the "overrated" buzz is stronger than ever.
