BCS Rankings: Oklahoma State Cowboys a Lock for BCS Championship Game
It's arguably as intriguing a scenario there is for the 2012 BCS title game, as out of nowhere the Oklahoma State Cowboys are now 10-0, No. 2 in the nation and cruising. There is no question this Cowboys team has proved, over the course of the season, that they are ready for a chance at a national title.
Why?
For one, this is a team that has been winning games easily against some tough, worthy opponents. Oklahoma State is 3-0 against ranked opponents, beating a No. 8 Texas A&M on the road 30-29, beating No. 22 Texas on the road 38-26 and topping No. 14 Kansas State just two weeks ago in a 52-45 shootout.
These big wins against ranked teams, with two coming on the road, prove that the undefeated Cowboys are tough enough to win games on away from home and against quality opponents.
The other key factor that separates Oklahoma State from the rest of the field is as easy as simply looking at the numbers. With the exception of LSU and No. 11 Houston, Oklahoma State is the only other undefeated team in Division-I football.
It was my belief as well as that of many that the team's final game against conference rival Oklahoma, who are No. 6 in the nation and 8-1 on the year, would be a difficult game to win. Yet just last week the Cowboys toppled a well-rounded, top-notch team in Texas Tech on the road 66-6. Oklahoma's one loss this season came at the hands of Texas Tech.
In that game between Texas Tech and Oklahoma, contrary to the whopping 66-6 win on the road for the Cowboys, Texas Tech dominated most of the game and was able to beat Oklahoma in Oklahoma.
Making sense of who beat whom and where each of the two games were played, it is evident that the Cowboys have the clear advantage in the matchup.
Another significant area is the fact that the Cowboys are simply better than the Sooners in the areas they take pride in. Truthfully, both teams are made up of elite passing games and an ability to put up points in a hurry. Yet it is the Cowboys that have the advantage in each regard.
Both quarterback Brandon Weeden for Oklahoma State and quarterback Landry Jones for Oklahoma are two of the best in the business, yet Weeden has shown he is the better of the two. On the season, Weeden has posted 31 touchdowns and 3,635 yards. Jones has put up 28 touchdowns and 3,349 yards.
When comparing offenses as a whole, the Cowboys are No. 2 in both points per game and passing yards per game, while the Sooners are No. 3 in passing yards and No. 6 in points for.
Ultimately all signs point to a Cowboys win in this contest, and as a result the team will likely find themselves 12-0 and a lock at the No. 2 spot when it's all said and done.
