College Football Chaos: What If Georgia Beats LSU in the SEC Championship?
I was extremely impressed with the way Georgia played against Auburn. The Bulldogs were extremely impressive on both sides of the ball. If Georgia can play that well against LSU for the SEC Championship, the Bulldogs could throw the wrench that creates the biggest mess in BCS Championship history.
Let us say in this argument that LSU is undefeated prior to losing to Georgia in the championship game. We will also say that Alabama finishes with only a loss to LSU. The Oregon Ducks also finish with only a loss to LSU. The winner of the Bedlam game would make up half of the national championship game, but who would make up the other half?
It would be hard to imagine LSU losing as a fairly heavy favorite and not dropping out of the top two, but who could possibly move ahead of them? Alabama and Oregon would be the two biggest contenders. LSU beat both of them.
LSU's win over the Ducks was rather decisive, while their game with the Crimson Tide went to overtime. Some voters would lean towards Oregon because they won their conference, but could we really say that they would be the second best team?
Also, if Oklahoma is the winner of the Bedlam game, Oregon would likely rank fifth in the computers behind Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, LSU and Alabama. The inferior computer rankings and borderline blowout loss to LSU would probably keep Oregon out of the title game.
Now we would be to choose between two SEC teams each with one loss. Alabama lost at home to LSU in overtime in their ninth game of the season, while LSU lost the last game they played to a two loss Georgia team. Would head to head prevail, or would LSU be punished for a late loss in a game they were clearly expected to win?
I would assume LSU would still play for the National Championship. The Tigers would have a better computer ranking than Alabama, and it would be possible for LSU to only drop from No. 1 to No. 2 in the polls because of the circumstances. The only thing that we know would certainly come from this is a very nervous selection Sunday for Alabama, LSU and Oregon.
Another possibility may be a Bedlam rematch for the BCS Championship. Technically the schools would share the Big 12 title with Oklahoma receiving the head to head tiebreaker. The computers seem to favor the Big 12 as the nation's toughest conference, so they could easily be one and two in the computers.
Two weeks into the season Georgia football was desperately wishing to be relevant again. Now the Bulldogs have a chance to create the most bizarre scenario in BCS history.
