Pacquiao vs Marquez 3: Adding Muscle a Grave Mistake for Marquez
Juan Manuel Marquez made a huge mistake by adding more bulk to his 144-pound frame. It’s a mistake that will cost him dearly.
The silver lining of Marquez’s career has been his ability to figure out his opponent, identify his greatest strength, then take it away. He is the king of the counter punch.
Counter punchers, when they have the timing down, can win, or more often, knock you out in the process. You have to rely on quickness and speed, not bulk.
Marquez is as bulky as he’s ever been and that plays into Manny Pcquiao’s hand quite favorably.
With the slower counters, Pac-Man can throw more powerful hooks then he was able to in the first two bouts. He can take more risks, which could lead to the first KO of the series. If you take away Marquez’s ability to chip away…you are in a great spot.
Another factor that has been widely discussed is the age difference.
Marquez is 38, not a death sentence in boxing, but pretty darn close. He was slowing down to begin with before adding 10-pounds of muscles. Now he’s a tortoise.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Pac-Man is in the best shape of his life and has only gotten quicker and more explosive since their last bout in 2008.
The 2008 version of Pacquiao would get absolutely pummeled by the 2011 version.
You can’t say that about Marquez.
That’s why this fight isn’t going to last 12 rounds. The speed and the power punches delivered by Pacquiao are going to add up and this time…Marquez won’t be able to counter.
