Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Pac-Man Will Conclude Trilogy with 7th-Round KO

Zachary D. RymerNov 12, 2011

The first fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez featured one really dominant round, and then 11 evenly-matched rounds. The second fight featured 12 more evenly-matched rounds.

The third and final fight between these two is going to be a little different. While I don't think any of us are settling in to see a completely one-sided fight, I do think that we are going to watch a fight that will end much more definitively than the first two.

And Pac-Man is going to be the winner.

No matter which way you prefer to look at it, Pac-Man has pretty much every advantage in this fight. He's already beaten Marquez once (the split decision in 2008), he's more experienced at welterweight, and he's a far more complete fighter than he was the last time he and Marquez met three years ago.

Marquez, on the other hand, did not do so well in his first foray into welterweight when he fought Floyd Mayweather, Jr. back in 2009. He's also 38 years old now, making him a geezer relative to the 32-year-old Pacquiao.

As such, whatever evenness that existed in the first two fights between these two is going to be greatly diminished. If they go 12 rounds again, it will be a shock.

That said, I actually think the flow of the fight, if you will, is going to be largely similar to the flow of the first two fights. Pac-Man got some big blows in here and there, but Marquez kept hanging in and hanging in, landing solid punches of his own along the way.

There's been a lot of chatter from Pac-Man's camp about a knockout, possibly before the fight hits the sixth round. Personally, I'm willing to give Marquez a little more credit than that. That he came in below the 144-pound catch weight at 142 pounds will help him maintain his speed, which he is going to need to use his renowned counterpunching abilities.

The key factor will be Pac-Man's right hand, which has come a long way in recent years. It's something that Marquez basically didn't have to cope with in their first two fights, and I don't think he's going to be able to fully cope with it in this fight.

Pac-Man will keep showing Marquez his right hand. As the fight wears on, it's just a matter of time before he's able to sneak in with a devastating punch from his left.

That will happen in the seventh round. Once Marquez feels it, he'll be down for the count.

And like that, this trilogy will end not with a whimper, but with a bang.
