Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Fight Must Be Last Between Pac-Man and Dinamita
Regardless of the result when Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez meet inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas tonight, it should be the final time the two men fight.
Three fights is pretty much the maximum any rivalry, especially one that's likely to become even more lopsided tonight, can sustain. Pacquiao needs to set his sights on bigger targets and it's hard to imagine another bout with Marquez drawing nearly as much hype as this one.
Not to mention, it's hard to maintain the same level of intensity when facing off with an opponent you've met multiple times before (via PhilStar.com).
"It could be the last. It should be the last.
There’s so much interest in this fight, not because their styles are certainly made for each other, and the fireworks they’ve provided inside the ring, but more for its emotional content. By their actions, it’s easy to see that they hate each other.
"
The 38-year-old Marquez is nearing the end of his main event career and, while Pac-Man's camp has done a nice job of building him up as a formidable opponent, shouldn't remain on Pacquiao's radar beyond Saturday night.
In reality, Pacquiao should fight either Floyd Mayweather or Sergio Martinez, who has called out the Fighting Pride of the Philippines in the past, next. Boxing needs a marquee bout that can actually live up to the hype.
Another match against Marquez wouldn't be able to do that. Instead, it would only further hurt boxing's chances of competing with UFC/MMA over the long term.
It's been a great trilogy through two bouts. A draw and a split decision show there is still a score to be settled.
However, the boxing community wants, and actually needs, something bigger than a fourth go around between Pacquiao and Marquez.
And because of that, there should be no conversations about Pac-Man vs. Dinamita IV.
