BCS Rankings: Does Stanford or Oklahoma St. Have Better Chance to Dethrone SEC?
When the BCS Rankings come out every Sunday, it's almost as if it is Christmas Day all over again. Which present did we all get and which team was ranked too high or low?
Everybody can argue about who should be third or fourth and so on, but the BCS always has a way of working itself out. Who you play and what they do the rest of the season are often used as factors in the BCS, but the best answer is the final scoreboard that results into wins and losses. At least if you continue to win you can stay in the discussion regardless of who you play, with a loss you will likely be shown the door (save SEC).
Well, the SEC has owned the BCS by winning five consecutive national championships and many are wondering if there is a team or a conference out there that can dethrone them?
One should start with Andrew Luck and the Cardinal, who certainly feel they have what it takes to defeat any team in the country.
After all, Luck is expected to be the top pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and he has not made many mistakes to make you believe he couldn’t give the LSU defense some issues.
Plus, they are built from the inside-out which is the true definition of whether or not you are a great team. They have a premier offensive line and can run the ball with ease against inferior defensive lines.
LSU’s front four has been spectacular in every facet you look at, so the question remains as to whether or not Stanford can even sneak by Oregon in the Pac-12. The speed is not top notch in Palo Alto and Luck needs his teammates to stay healthy. If they do get by the Ducks, I am not sold on Stanford being the clear cut team to dethrone the SEC. Don’t forget that the Oklahoma State Cowboys offense ranks in the top three in scoring offense, passing offense and total offense.
Brandon Weeden has been sensational this season, but the biggest difference to this Oklahoma State compared to previous years past has been how quickly they can score. They have by far the most explosive offense in the country and the main guy might just be running back/slot receiver Joseph Randle.
Randle can take a pass out in the flats all the way to the house and can do the same as a downhill and outside the tackles runner.
Plus, the defense currently leads the nation in turnovers forced (31) which certainly gives them a chance. Most “experts” believe both Oklahoma State and Stanford may both lose before the regular season is done with.
However, not everybody is sold with these Cowboys because of the atrocious defensive numbers. They rank 110th in total defense allowing 461 yards per game and are 100th against the pass allowing 265 yards per game.
There a few athletes who can play on Sundays for this Pokes defense and that includes Broderick Brown, Shaun Lewis, Johnny Thomas and Markelle Martin.
The defensive line has been an issue at times, but they rank 23rd in sacks with 24 for the season. The corners will be tested against Texas Tech as well as Oklahoma in Bedlam.
Luckily, the game is in Stillwater and to make matters easier for Oklahoma State, there is no Big 12 championship game.
If the Cowboys can continue to survive and advance they will have a tremendous opportunity at playing for the BCS National Championship.
