Mike McQueary: Scandal's Most Polarizing Figure Must Speak to Save His Name
The Penn State scandal is not going away any time soon.
Joe Paterno needed to be fired, and that needed to happen immediately. The people making that decision at Penn State were 100 percent correct in making that decision, no matter how much of an icon Paterno is at Penn State. This was not a situation with any other good solutions.
But how exactly does Mike McQueary still have a job?
Fox News was one of several outlets to report that McQueary won't coach the Nittany Lions on Saturday, out of a physical threat. But unless I am missing something, his job is still intact.
How does this make sense?
As a 28-year-old man, McQueary reportedly saw Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy. Rather than stop it, he went away, called his dad. The two then told Paterno the next day.
Why didn't McQueary do something to stop Sandusky when he saw it? Why didn't McQueary go to the police instead of his dad and Joe Paterno?
The only man who can answer those questions is McQueary.
He may be legally okay, though that's still a pending matter that I don't want to get into. But this is not a popular person right now, nor should he be.
Quite frankly, he needs to step up and tell us exactly what he saw and why he decided to take this action. I know that may be uncomfortable, and it may include some pretty graphic details, but this is something that needs to be heard by a public that's been bombarded with this scandal over the last week.
I'm not a person who thinks that Paterno should have been kept and McQueary should have been fired. No, they both needed to go. But why has that only happened to one person—and not the one person who actually had an ability to stop something.
I don't know what chance McQueary has at saving his name. I'll admit that, right now, it doesn't look good. But any chance he has lies squarely on his shoulders. He needs to speak up and speak out. Until then, he's leaving it up to a very confused and frustrated public to make their assumptions. That's not a good thing.
