Pacquiao vs. Marquez Time: 5 Things to Know for Saturday's Fight
The much-hyped third battle between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez is finally upon us. Here are five things you need to know before Saturday's fight.
1. Pacquiao is pissed
Despite all the pre-fight pleasantries being exchanged, Pacquiao doesn't like Marquez one bit.
After Pacquiao's split decision victory in their most recent fight, Marquez complained nonstop. He even visited the Philippines, where Pacquiao is nothing short of a god, while wearing a t-shirt that said he got robbed.
Now Pacquiao isn't just motivated. He's absolutely furious, and Marquez should be terrified.
Pacquiao's conditioning coach Alex Ariza said that Pacquiao wanted to be as big for this fight as he was when he knocked out Miguel Cotto.
"But Cotto was the equivalent of a linebacker and Marquez is a free safety," Ariza said. "I think he just wants to kill Marquez."
2. This is a welterweight fight
Both fighters will weigh in at 144 pounds, 17 pounds heavier than their last meeting.
The two have had varying levels of success as welterweights.
Pacquiao has been dominant, crushing all seven opponents he's faced in this weight class.
Marquez has only had one fight as a welterweight, and it went terribly. He was embarrassed by Floyd Mayweather for 12 painful rounds.
3. Marquez's bulk means less speed
The biggest advantage Marquez had in the previous meetings was his counter-punching ability. But his age (38) and new muscle mass will reduce his speed, thus neutralizing his greatest strength.
He won't be able to land as many quality hits on Pacquiao this time around.
4. Pacquiao has made drastic improvements
Pacquiao was a one dimensional fighter in 2008. He had a massive left hand, but that was it.
Now, he might be the most balanced boxer in the world. He has devastating power in both hands, something very few fighters can claim.
Marquez had enough trouble with Pacquiao when only his left hand was a threat. Now he also has to worry about Pac-Man's vicious right hook.
5. This may be Marquez's last big fight
Marquez knows that this is likely his last opportunity to take on one of the world's best pound-for-pound fighters.
He won't get another shot at Mayweather, and there simply isn't any other all-time great talent out there for him to face.
He has an incredible resume (53 wins, 39 knockouts, 8 world titles in 3 divisions) and this is his last chance to add to it.
I expect him to come out with the urgency of a man who may never fight again.
