Kell Brook Should Fight Randall Bailey to Land Amir Khan
Kell Brook (25-0, 17 KO) is an undefeated welterweight currently outshined by British standout Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO).
A fight with Khan in England could be a huge all-Britain showdown that displays the talent of both men and rakes in a ton of money, but Khan doesn't desire to face Brook under his current promoter.
Because Brook appears to love his promoter, he needs to find an alternate route to make Khan fight him and there is a full-proof way to do so.
Khan is currently a junior welterweight and wants to face Floyd Mayweather, the WBC welterweight world champion, in a dream fight. Brook could use this to his advantage to land a fight with Khan.
Mayweather's last two opponents were welterweight world champions at the time he faced them.
Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO) was WBC welterweight champ and Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO) was WBA welterweight champ.
Mayweather has recently issued a challenge to face Manny Pacquiao, the current WBO welterweight world champ, next year.
If this trend continues, Khan needs a welterweight world title. If Brook gets the title first, Khan has to go through him to get to Mayweather.
Outside of titles Mayweather and Khan's friend and sparring partner Pacquiao own, there are only two other major welterweight world champions.
Viacheslav Senchenko (32-0, 21 KO) is the current WBA champ, but he usually only fights in his home country of Ukraine.
Brook took out Rafal Jackiewicz (38-10-1, 19 KO) in the sixth round, becoming the first man to stop him and the No. 1 contender for Senchenko's WBA belt.
Team Brook says he'll go for a world title in Spring of 2012, but he has an American television debut on December 17 on the undercard of Andre Ward vs Carl Froch.
Brook doesn't know who his next opponent will be, but he wants someone with a decent record. It is here that the IBF welterweight world title comes into play.
Enter Randall Bailey (42-7, 36 KO), an American hard puncher up in age, but a highly ranked welterweight on the IBF's Top 10.
Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO) was the IBF champ after stopping Jan Zaveck (31-2, 18 KO) in Round 5 this past September, but he decided to vacate his belt to face Ortiz in a rematch of their April blockbuster.
This means the Top Two contenders of the IBF's rankings can fight for the vacant title. Bailey is in the second ranking and the first ranking is currently vacant.
To fill the No. 1 slot's vacancy, Mike Jones (25-0, 19 KO) will face Sebastian Andres Lujan (38-5-2, 24 KO) on the undercard of Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO) vs. Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO) two weeks before Brook's American debut.
Brook is already ranked in the IBF's Top 10, so he can challenge Bailey for his ranking. Brook has a television date in December on Showtime's Super Six Finals event that can tempt Bailey into a fight.
Bailey hasn't fought on the televised portion of a major undercard in some time. Bailey is a hard puncher who might come motivated, but Brook can outbox Bailey with the right game plan.
If he beats Bailey, Jones will have to go through him for the vacant belt. Two undefeated welterweights hungry for a world title is an easy sell to HBO or Showtime.
If Brook takes the vacant title from Jones, he can come at Senchenko with a bit more authority because he is a title owner. Senchenko definitely won't be able to tell him to come to Ukraine to fight.
If Senchenko doesn't want to fly all the way to the States, he can come to England to unify. Senchenko has fought in other European countries before, so going to England isn't too far a stretch.
If Brook defeats Senchenko, he'll have the only two championship belts Khan can get, and his name will be elevated to a new high in boxing discussion, possibly over Khan's.
Defeating a hard-hitting American veteran and two undefeated warriors would add greatly to his resume. Brook needs the boost, and it's either now or never. Waiting does nothing in his position.
All it takes is a modern-day Buster Douglas-esque situation to happen to Khan to ruin the fight, but this two-to-three fight plan (two if Brook doesn't see the point in fighting Senchenko) can be implemented quickly.
Khan may only have room for two fights in the time Brook can beat these three men. The path will not be easy, but it will be more than worth the effort, and Brook will get everything he wants from it.
