Manny Pacquiao: Will Mayweather Be Waiting If Pacquiao Loses?

Michael DixonNov 10, 2011

The super fight looms large over the world of boxing: Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.

Will it ever happen? If so, how will it happen?

Well, I guess I need to say that I don't know what either man's the financial situation is. I've heard rumors, but nothing more than rumors. The fact is that their financial situations are not my business, and never will be.

So let's remove that as a factor here.

If Juan Manuel Marquez beats Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night, would Floyd Mayweather, Jr. have any interest taking Pacquiao on as an opponent?

Is it still a dream match if Pacquiao loses? That's an interesting question.

Dan Rafael of ESPN reported Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe as saying the following:

"

"We're looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella...Floyd made it very clear that he wants to give the fans the biggest fights that are out there. He wants to stay active. We're going to do everything in our power to make the biggest fight out there for the fans and we all know what the fight is."

"

Yes, we all do know what that fight is. But, is it the "biggest fight possible" if Pacquiao doesn't beat Marquez?

The fact of the matter is that in terms of big names, Mayweather and Pacquiao are No. 1 and No. 2, in no particular order.

That won't change if Marquez beats him. Some of the overall purse would probably go down if Pacquiao were to be upset by Marquez, that much is undeniable.

But if Ellerbe is serious and Mayweather really wants to give the fans the "biggest fight possible," then he will be ready to take Pacquiao on whether he beats Marquez or not.

In a sport in which you actually need to sell your fight to a live audience and a viewing audience, name recognition is just as important, if not more important, than fight quality. No two names merged together would draw better than Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Honestly, that's going to be the case for quite some time.
