Pacquiao vs Marquez: How Marquez Could Actually Win the Fight
Most have written Juan Manuel Marquez off, and I am one of those people. Knowing his nature and approach in the ring, it doesn't seem as though he'll be able to enact the type of game plan to defeat Manny Pacquiao, but there is a way he could.
Marquez has shown the ability to counterpunch effectively against Pacquiao and this strategy can't be abandoned. What he must do, in regulation of that, is know when to depart from exchanges.
It has been proven, he can't punch with Pacquiao; as a matter of fact, Pacquiao's power has been the deciding factor in both of their two previous bouts.
In the first fight, Pac-man dropped Marquez three times in the first round. Though Marquez came back to outbox Pacquiao for the remainder of the bout, he was unable to get make up the humongous earlier deficit. He was actually lucky the fight wasn't stopped in the first round.
In the second fight, Marquez was more prepared, and though Pacquiao wobbled him a few times, Marquez only went down once, in the third round. Still, that knockdown was likely the deciding factor in Pacquiao's slim, split decision win over Marquez.
Marquez must employ a strategy of get yours and go. Even if he doesn't win the exchange initially, he must refrain from the long exchange as Manny is simply the more powerful and explosive puncher.
As far as movement, Marquez must avoid the straight left and the power right-hand shot from Pacquiao. Though Pacquiao is a southpaw, he throws a power straight right that is far harder than a jab. Marquez must counter and move to his left to stay away from Pacquiao's power, as this will also shorten the exchanges.
All of this is tall order for Marquez, physically and mentally. I don't see it happening, but there is always a way.
