Penn State Scandal: New Victims Dig Deeper Hole for University
The first report that came out against Jerry Sandusky from the grand jury testimony put the University of Penn State in a hole that would be almost be impossible to climb out of.
One allegation of abuse would have been enough to rock the foundation of the Joe Paterno coaching regime. Two, would have been almost impossible to recover from. But, when Jerry Sandusky was indicted on 40 counts of abuse against children it sent them into a hole that they cannot recover from.
Now that the first wave of victims have come out, it opens the door for more victims who may have been afraid to come forward before, but now have the courage to come against Sandusky. Which, for Penn State, is a worst case scenario as the university tries to repair an image that got destroyed all because of one person.
In the original report, there were eight victims that came out who testified in the grand jury’s investigation that lasted over three years.
According to Myfoxphilly.com, “Sources tell FOX 29 News that, since a press conference on Monday, the number of potential victims has more than doubled in the case. We've learned there may be as many as 17 accusers coming forward against one-time Penn State University defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.”
It’s hard to imagine that more and more people are going to come out as victims of this horrible crime. How were we supposed to know we were only just scratching the surface of these allegations when the original report came out?
What’s the final number that will come out of this investigation? Can we expect to see the numbers climb to 20-30, with more and more people coming out as this story picks up steam heading towards the trial?
With every new victim that speaks out about their time with Sandusky it makes the story harder to pay attention to. It’s already the worst scandal to ever rock a university.
It’s a lot worse than any of the pay-for-performance scandals that hit USC, Miami (FL), Ohio State and Southern Methodist University. Granted, a person was not killed in this scandal, like the one that shook the Baylor University basketball program. However, because it involves multiple children and is a more prestigious program, it will impact more people and live on for a lot longer with the university.
Every prominent figure at Penn State is going through a bad nightmare right now and no one is going to wake up anytime soon. We are just beginning this horrible story, and it's not going to end anytime soon.
