Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Will Manny's Humility Cost Him a Victory?
Manny Pacquiao—known for his humility and humanitarian efforts—has a huge fight coming up with Juan Manuel Marquez. This is the same man Pacquiao previously fought to a draw and beat in a questionable split-decision victory.
Marquez has wanted a third bout with Pacquiao for quite some time now—their previous fight was in 2008. Marquez has said he didn't feel as if he got a fair shake in 2004; he felt that he had beaten Pacquiao.
Marquez has a fire in him to win this fight.
Pacquiao has moved up in weight classes lately—and has made it look effortless. He has fought at the welterweight and even super welterweight divisions.
The Marquez fight will be at welterweight with the catch weight of 144 lbs. The weight class should lead to a new look at this classic rivalry.
The third installment of the match-up will surely be a heated exchange, especially since we know Marquez has been drooling for this fight for years.
We're not sure, though, how amped up Pacquiao is. His humble demeanor does not lend itself to bashing an opponent. That he seldom loses his composure is one of the reasons he became a congressman in his country.
Pacquiao, of course, has superior boxing skills. They are superior to almost anyone (if not everyone) in boxing right now. But sometimes an extra edge is needed in a fight of this magnitude.
Sure, this is not Floyd Mayweather he is fighting, but an opponent who is talented, hungry and feels slighted by the previous two go-rounds. It's a dangerous fight for Pacquiao—if you saw the first two, you know that.
If Marquez has the fire—the same fire in the pit of his stomach that we heard about when he was wandering the Philippines looking for Pacquiao in attempts to get this rematch—then there will be a lot of emotion coming from him.
Pacquiao is calm and collected in the ring—which is not to say he doesn't fight with emotion—and that has helped him win world titles in eight weight classes.
It is certainly not a drawback for a boxer to be humble or calm and collected. Still, with an opponent who wants a victory so badly, Pacquiao may need to get a little nasty.
He will need to keep up with the raw emotion coming off the canvas on Saturday night to come away with the win.
