LSU Football: 5 Reasons Why LSU Should Not Play Alabama in the BCS Title Game
LSU and Alabama showed just why they are considered to be the two best teams in the country.
In a defensive battle, LSU topped the Tide in overtime by an ugly 9-6 score.
But is it fair to say that these two teams should play again in the BCS Title Game?
No, it is not.
There are still five remaining undefeated teams in the country, and if two of those teams, other than Houston, remain undefeated, those are the teams that should play in the Championship Game.
Let's break down five reasons why LSU and Alabama should not have that rematch in the BCS Title Game.
They Had Their Chance
1 of 5Each team entered this past Saturday's game knowing that if they won, they controlled their own destiny to the BCS National Title Game.
Each team had an equal chance, and in the end, LSU came on top, and Alabama simply did not.
It was a great game if you love defense. It was a close game any which way you look at it. But the bottom line here is that each team had a chance, each team knew what was on the line, and when the final kick in overtime went through the uprights, LSU got the win, and Alabama did not.
Therefore, LSU is in (assuming they win out), and Alabama should not be.
The Hype Is in the Past
2 of 5There were plenty of people referring to this past week's LSU vs. Alabama game as being the "Game of the Century."
That's quite a hefty slogan to tag to a college football game, but you have to admit, with all that was at stake and with as good as these two teams have been this season, that title really didn't come without reason.
But the point here is that this game had a ton of hype surrounding it heading into it. Everyone wanted to see these two dominant defenses and which offense would crack first. Everyone wanted the ticket to this game to say they saw the two best teams in college football battle it out.
Well, they saw it. LSU got the last laugh. And now it is over. So now, I ask, how could they ever create that type of hype again?
All the matchup previews have already been done; all the interesting side stories and facts have already been written. The hype was there, it came, and now it is in the past, and realistically, there's no way to create it all again, even if it is for a BCS National Title.
Alabama Has a Loss, Others Don't
3 of 5With the way college football is right now, there is no way that there shouldn't be at least two teams who finish the season undefeated and get a chance to play for the BCS National Title Game.
When LSU won it over Ohio State in 2007, the Tigers actually had two losses on the season and backed their way into the title game, which was upsetting for some, to see a team with two losses be crowned the top team in college football.
Right now as it stands—LSU, Boise State, Stanford, Oklahoma State and Houston are all unbeaten at this point in the season. I can understand taking Houston out of that occasion because to say they don't play any real competition might be putting it lightly.
But between LSU, Boise State, Stanford and Oklahoma State, you would have to assume that at least two of those four will go unbeaten this year, and those are the two that should rightfully be playing in the National Championship Game.
Offense Sells Tickets
4 of 5As close as this past Saturday's game was between LSU and Alabama, unless you really love defensive-minded football, this probably wasn't the most exciting game to watch as a common spectator.
LSU and Alabama are known for their defense, and that’s just how it is. Both teams have a ton of skill on offense, but when you match them up against one another, you had to know that this one was going to be a defensive slugfest.
Now, if you take a look at the other three potential National Title contenders—Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State—all three teams have explosive offenses, and all three would make for an intriguing matchup.
Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. If that holds true, it's good news for LSU and for the college football world in general.
It's Only Fair
5 of 5I know Alabama is a great football team and I know they play in the challenging SEC conference. But it is only fair, that if Boise State, Stanford, or Oklahoma State go undefeated, they get a chance to play for the BCS Title Game.
Right now, Alabama is ranked ahead of both Stanford and Boise State in the BCS Standings, which just doesn't seem right given their record.
Once Stanford plays some stronger competition, which they will in the next few weeks, and if they beat the likes of Oregon and Notre Dame, Stanford rightfully should skip Alabama in those rankings.
But with Boise State, these BCS Rankings are basically saying that if Boise finished unbeaten and Alabama finished with just one loss, that the Tide would be chosen to go to the title game ahead of them.
This just goes to show and gives even more reason as to exactly why college football needs a playoff.
