NFL Week 10 Picks: Identifying Underdogs Sure to Be Buried

Andrea HangstNov 9, 2011

In a 16-week season, little is impossible in the NFL. Upsets happen every week, and they're one of the most thrilling things about the sport. However, two underdogs in Week 10 will be lucky just to emerge from their respective contests with points on the board.

The Seattle Seahawks host the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday, with the former coming off a 10-point loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Ravens, on the other hand, come to town after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last seconds of their Week 9 game.

The Seahawks are the 26th-ranked offense in the league, according to Football Outsiders, while the Ravens boast the NFL's strongest defense.

That mismatch will be the key to this week's contest. Baltimore doesn't have one of the most explosive offenses in the league, but that stifling defense will prevent Seattle from gaining any ground.

Just as the Steelers shut out the Seahawks in Week 2, the Ravens will see similar success. The degree of the blowout won't rest on the shoulders of Seattle's defense; rather, it will be dependent upon which Ravens offense shows up on Sunday.

If it's the team we saw in Week 9—who threw the ball and converted third downs at will—the Seahawks will be buried under Baltimore's points, with no chance of a comeback.

There's no question that the Green Bay Packers will field that same, league-leading offense for a 10th consecutive week when they host the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

The Packers have scored 275 points so far this season—the most in the league—and opponent after opponent cannot seem to find a way to stop them.

The last time these two teams met, it marked the debut of rookie Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder. The team gave Green Bay a run for their money, but eventually fell 33-27.

Much of their success can be attributed to Ponder's presence throwing the Packers defense a curveball. The team couldn't adequately plan for a quarterback they had never seen.

Now that Ponder has an accumulated body of work, the Packers will be prepared to stop him.

While running back Adrian Peterson is always a threat to every team he faces—and he'll surely accumulate a number of yards—he alone won't be enough to close the huge gap in points produced from Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his numerous receivers.

The Packers will effortlessly put up 30 or more points on Monday night, and the Vikings won't be able to keep the game close in the two teams' second meeting of the season.
