ESPN Films Roll Tide War Eagle: Epic Rivalry Proves Pride Knows No Limit

T.J. McaloonNov 8, 2011

Let’s start off by saying, Alabama and Auburn fans have one thing and only one thing in common, aside from both of their schools playing in the state of Alabama; both of you are insanely passionate about your team.

The state of Alabama is put on center stage in the latest ESPN 30 for 30 documentary entitled “Roll Tide/ War Eagle.” It gives a fantastic look into the minds, hearts and souls of former Alabama and Auburn players, plus fans.

One fan in particular that is shown in the preview is the gentlemen who allegedly poisoned Auburn’s famous Toomer Corner trees last fall after his beloved Alabama lost to Auburn at home.

It’s a gutsy move for the Harvey Updyke to appear in this 30 for 30 movie, as his case is still pending into if he is the person responsible for poising the beloved trees.

Updyke’s blind school pride to Alabama got the former Texas State Trooper in a lot of hot water, when he thought that his simple call into an Auburn Radio Station would go unheard.

Sorry for Updyke, and any other wannabe Updyke’s from Auburn, who would think of getting retaliation for the poising of Toomer’s Trees. In today’s day and age, it’s almost impossible to get away with anything due to the advances in technology.

Not all fans are as crazy as Updyke.

In fact last year an Alabama worker who controlled the in-stadium music, was fired because of music he was playing before the “Iron Bowl” last year. The person who was working was just trying to have a little fun at the expense of Auburn’s quarterback Cam Newton, by playing songs like Steve Miller’s “Take the Money and Run” and Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man.”

This was all in good fun and no one was hurt by this person’s actions. However, take a look at another rivalry and try to find an act like the poising of the trees or playing music before a game directed at a team who’s going through an NCAA investigation.

Not all supporters of Alabama or Auburn want to kill each other over school pride. As shown in the documentary tonight, you will see some happily married couples who have found a way to survive living in a house with an Alabama or Auburn fan.

So if you yell Roll Tide or War Eagle, you will love this documentary. As I said above, you fans have one thing in common, you both are absolutely passionate about your school and will do everything in your power to let everyone around you know it.
