Key Storyline: Oklahoma State Avoiding the Upset.

The Pokes are trying to avoid what happened to their biggest rival and only real contender remaining in the Big 12, the Oklahoma Sooners.

As you may recall, the Sooners were upset in Week 9 by the Red Raiders, 41-38, and ended their run near the top of the BCS rankings.

Oklahoma State narrowly squeezed by Kansas State last weekend and needs to be on upset alert once again this week.

They control their own destiny and will make the BCS National Championship Game if they win out.

WR Josh Cooper—QST (Hamstring)—The senior receiver missed last game with a pulled hammy. The No. 2 receiver set the K-State game as a probable date for his return but that did not happen. We will see if he hits the field this week but it’s not certain.

RB Jeremy Smith—QST (Hand)—The backup RB did not play last week because of his hand injury and it isn’t clear he will play in this game. He had 502 yards and seven TDs before being sidelined.

CB Tre Porter—DBT (Head)—Porter missed last week with his head injury and it is highly doubtful he returns this week to take on the Cowboys. It will definitely hurt for them not to have a starter in the secondary against that prolific offense.

LB Blake Dees—QST (Ankle)—This true freshman was third on the team in tackles before missing the past three games with an ankle injury. Daniel Cobb has replaced him and will start again if Dees can’t go.

BCS/Top 25 Implications

Texas Tech had a short-lived run in the top 25 of the BCS rankings after knocking out the Sooners but immediately fell to Iowa State and Texas.

They are trying to halt their slide and jump back in by knocking out the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Oklahoma State is trying to avoid that upset and wants to win out and make the first BCS bowl and national championship game in school history.

They certainly have the offensive firepower to do that and their toughest opponent is scheduled for the last day of the season, Dec. 3, when they play the Sooners.

They need to be undefeated going into that game. Any losses will crush their BCS hopes.

What They're Saying

Chris Day at the Stillwater NewsPress is reporting that Mike Gundy isn’t taking all the credit for the success of his Pokes program. He believes Les Miles laid the foundation and he has expanded upon it.

"

Gundy served as Miles’ offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. “I enjoyed the time that I was here with him as a head coach and I was an assistant because offensively we worked together everyday,” Gundy said. “I learned a lot from him.”

"

Don Williams at LubbockOnline notes that Texas Tech’s defense is at a low point they have not seen since 2003.

"

“The struggle from my point of view getting over to the players is we’ve got to have breaks, but people aren’t going to give you breaks,” coach Tommy Tuberville said. “You’ve got to cause fumbles. You’ve got to get interceptions, knock the ball loose, tackle the football. You’ve got to create turnovers.”

Texas’ 52-20 conquest of Tech on Saturday dropped the Red Raiders to national rankings of No. 104 in scoring defense and No. 108 in total defense.

"

Oklahoma State Player to Watch: Justin Blackmon

This kid is incredible and is going to be an early first-round pick in the NFL Draft. He had 13 receptions for 205 yards and two scores last week to help keep OK States national title hopes alive.

Texas Tech Player to Watch: Seth Doege

Doege played phenomenally against Oklahoma and will need another great game to even think about upsetting OK State.

He threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns in that game without an interception and also punched another score in on the ground.

Key Matchup: Texas Tech Defense vs. Oklahoma State Offense.

If the Red Raiders cannot start playing better on defense they have no shot against the prolific Pokes’ offense.

Brandon Weeden, Justin Blackmon and company will eviscerate the No. 108 total defense for a ton of points in this game unless they step up big time.
