Notre Dame Football: Trying to Poach Penn State Recruits Would Be in Poor Taste
Considering the gravity of the current scandal at Penn State, the thoughts of everyone should be with the victims.
But outside of State College, life must go on, and for many high school players, a tough decision must be made as to whether or not they want to play their college ball as a Nittany Lion.
One of PSU’s biggest recruiting rivals is Notre Dame. Just this year, the Irish are/have targeted upwards of a dozen prospects, including All-American defensive end Noah Spence, who tweeted the following in regards to the Penn State scandal.
“Um psu might be a no no for me ewwww” and “i kind of just dnt want to be apart of that.”
The fact of the matter is that Notre Dame still needs to get quality players, and their rival’s demise is good for the program when it comes to recruiting.
However, that does not mean that the Irish should go throwing this around as some type of recruiting tactic.
We are talking about the destruction of the childhood of at least eight young men here, and no one should degrade what they’ve had to go through to get a high school student to attend a certain college.
If a kid brings it up, it’s OK to talk about because it unfortunately is a real issue, but it would be incredibly classless to do more than give the players strongly considering Penn State a call to gather their thoughts on the situation.
For Notre Dame, the object here should be self-preservation and to not step over the line or get dragged into this situation, which is rapidly spinning out of control. That means stay far away from Penn State recruits unless it’s just to see how they’re feeling or if those players come to the Irish first.
