Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Could Mayweather Fight Still Happen If Pac-Man Lost?
The biggest fight in the history of the sport of boxing may happen in the not too distant future. The fight that everyone is dying to see—no, begging to see—is the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
And it sounds like, according to ESPN news anchor John Buccigross, the fight will go down a lot sooner than we expected.
Before we can move forward to this epic fight that will no doubt draw the highest buy rate for a pay-per-view in boxing history, there is a fight for Pacquiao that he has to win against Juan Manuel Marquez before we can move on to the Mayweather fight.
It’s not on a lot of people’s minds, but you have to ask yourself this question: What happens if Pacquiao loses this fight against Marquez?
Could anything derail the epic hype more than Pacquiao coming into the Mayweather fight with a loss?
The clear answer is no.
Every fighter has an off day. Just because a fighter happens to lose a fight, it does not make them a lesser boxer. The same goes for “Pac-Man.” If he happens to lose a split decision to Marquez, it will only strengthen this fight.
Even if Pacquiao happens to lose before the Mayweather fight, it will not be his first.
There will not be a new story line between the two fighters; it will still be the same story of which fighter is the true best in their sport.
From the die-hard boxing fans to the casual ones, they know about these two fighters and they know that a match between the two will finally show who is the greatest fighter of the last 10 years.
The Pacquiao camp has to know that, win or lose (against Marquez), the boxing community will use the fight against Mayweather as the true measuring stick for who was the best fighter of their time.
The fight against Marquez will just be a footnote in the bigger picture: The Floyd “Money” Mayweather fight.
