BCS Standings: Alabama Ranked Too High After Low-Scoring Loss

Mick AkersNov 6, 2011

The SEC bias has reared its ugly head again after Alabama only dropped one spot after an uninspiring performance against No. 1 LSU in Week 10.

I figured that 'Bama would still be ahead of Boise State, but being ahead of an undefeated Stanford is just ridiculous.

Stanford, led by the media's favorite player, quarterback Andrew Luck, was not shown any respect in the latest ranking. The Cardinal stood still at No. 4 despite a 38-13 blowout victory over Oregon State.

Alabama has some good wins on its schedule, but there are some less-than-stellar ones as well.

'Bama has beaten four teams with a winning record out of its eight wins, which is not too impressive. I would find it fair if LSU lost and just dropped to No. 2—even over Oklahoma State—due to the Tigers' extremely strong schedule this year, but Alabama hasn't earned that room for error.

Stanford is going to find it very difficult to make it into the BCS title game even if there are more one-loss teams come the end of the season, as it seems like any SEC team will get the nod over the Cardinal, even though the SEC is an overrated conference this season.

I first thought there was no way that Alabama would remain a BCS title game hopeful after its lackluster loss, but the BCS rankings system ended up showing the Crimson Tide too much respect.

If the Tide go undefeated in their final three regular season games, it will be difficult to imagine them being left out of the national championship game after just a one-spot drop following a poor showing in a loss.

In the end it will be just another BCS decision that makes 98 percent of the world scratch their heads, wondering what just happened.
