BCS Rankings: Why Oklahoma State Is Headed to BCS Title Game
After Alabama lost to No. 1 LSU on Saturday, the Oklahoma State Cowboys will likely move into the No. 2 spot in the BCS rankings.
And as they get set to defeat their next three opponents, including in-state rival Oklahoma, it will be Oklahoma State that faces LSU in the BCS Championship Game.
Early in the season, I had the Sooners defeating the Cowboys in their final game of the regular season, given their noticeable advantage on defense.
But the more I watch the Cowboys offense, the more I believe this team will defy logic.
The Cowboys gave up 45 points to then-No. 14 Kansas State on Saturday, but they also exploded for 52 points. This is after they dropped 59 points on Baylor.
Led by the best quarterback-receiver combination in college football, Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State has the ability to put up big points even against Oklahoma.
The Sooners have a very good defense, but it's not like they are on the same level as LSU and Alabama, allowing 19.8 points per game. In my mind, it would have to take an elite defense like LSU's or Alabama's to stop the high-powered attack of the Cowboys.
That's why I have Oklahoma State defeating Oklahoma, then losing to LSU in the title game.
There are a select few offenses that can overcome clear deficiencies in their defenses and beat top teams. Oklahoma State is one of these teams.
You can only hope to contain Weeden and Blackmon, and it's rare that these two are even contained. Blackmon has five games of 120 receiving yards or more this season.
You add in the fact that the Cowboys are averaging 5.3 yards per carry behind Joseph Randle and Jeremy Smith (25 combined rushing TDs) and you have an offense that can beat you in a variety of ways.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys will defy convention this season and giddy-up to the BCS Championship Game.
