BCS Rankings: Projecting How the Top 5 Will Look in Week 11

Austin GreenNov 6, 2011

Everyone knew there would be a shakeup atop the BCS standings after Saturday's "Game of the Century" between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama.

Third-ranked Oklahoma State barely avoided an upset, which would have obliterated the Top Five as we know it. But they held on, so there won't be too much change when the new BCS rankings are released tonight.

Here is how the Top Five should look in Week 11.

No. 1 LSU Tigers

No surprise here.

The Tigers survived a defensive bloodbath against Alabama, prevailing 9-6 in overtime.

This game caused defensive purists to rejoice and offensive lovers to contemplate suicide. Ultimately, the final score looked more like a World Series game than a college football game.

LSU was able to hold on despite some very shaky quarterback play. Starter Jarrett Lee threw almost as many interceptions (two) as completions (three).

Luckily, Lee was saved by Alabama's equally sketchy kicking game. The two Alabama kickers combined to miss three field goals and had another one blocked.

No. 2 Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Cowboys improved to 9-0 and inched one step closer towards a spot in the national championship game with their thrilling victory over No. 14 Kansas State.

Led by 502 passing yards and four touchdowns from Brandon Weeden, OK State held on to win 52-45.

The Cowboys now have three wins over ranked teams and can cement their championship status with a win over Oklahoma in the regular season finale.

No. 3 Stanford Cardinal

The Cardinal won yet another blowout, crushing lowly Oregon State 38-13.

I'm still a little skeptical about Stanford's national title chances, as they still haven't impressed against quality opposition.

They can make a big statement next week when they take on No. 8 Oregon.

No. 4 Boise State Broncos

The Broncos are in the same position they are in every year: undefeated with a weak schedule.

Personally, I think Boise State deserves more national respect than they get. But until they play multiple quality opponents like the teams in the power conferences, they will continue to get overlooked in BCS championship discussions.

No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma has been impressive since their upset loss to Texas Tech, winning their last two games by an average of 28.5 points.

The Sooners can still appear in the national title game if they beat Oklahoma State in the last game of the season. Unfortunately, they lost star receiver Ryan Broyles for the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

Also, don't be surprised at all to see Alabama in this slot. They had perhaps the most impressive defeat I've ever seen.
