LSU vs Alabama: Rematch, or No Rematch, in the BCS Title Game?
The Game of the Century turned out to be one of most exciting games I have ever watched. That may sound horrible considering it was only a 9-6 OT win for LSU, but overall, you have to admit that the matchup of these two SEC powerhouses in their prime was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
It seriously needs to stay that way. There is already tons of strong commentary out there that since 'Bama "barely" lost the game and if they can finish out the rest of the season undefeated, they deserve a rematch with their rival from the bayou in the National Championship Game.
They do not deserve anything. Here's the deal. I was betting (not literally) on Saban and the Tide to crush LSU. Heading into the game, Alabama had a better offense, defense and held the home field advantage. However, the Crimson Tide made way too many small mistakes to win that game and were outperformed by the Tigers. From personal experience, that's just the way it goes sometimes.
Are they both great teams? Most certainly. Do they both deserve a BCS Bowl if they win out? Definitely. Should it be against each other? Absolutely not.
I'll say this once and I'll say this a million times, Alabama had their chance. Honestly, they blew it. Costly errors and some bad coaching was what killed them and no matter how great the Tide remains, there is no way LSU should see them again.
There are two huge problems with anyone's argument that an LSU vs. 'Bama National Title Game would be the best for college football.
First, there would be no other conferences represented in the title game besides the SEC. Now, I believe that the SEC is the best football conference and will continue to believe that forever (most likely), but having a rematch would be completely detrimental to not only the rest of the nation, but also to the SEC.
If these two played for the National Title, you might as well forget the bowl system and just set up a neutral location in Mississippi. It's completely ridiculous to believe that any undefeated team would get overlooked for the title game. Even if there were no other undefeated teams, it's still hard to compute an Alabama-LSU championship game.
The rest of the nation and their conferences would be left out of having the chance to compete for the crystal ball. They would be angry, frustrated and plain outraged to see a team that LSU has already defeated matching up against them in the Super Dome. You might as well change if from the National Championship to the SEC Championship Part II.
Secondly, it would also hurt the SEC to see two teams in the National Title. You may be thinking that if the SEC has two teams in the title, they know that an SEC team will win it. It's a guarantee. However, the SEC would not be proving their dominance to anyone.
The whole idea behind the SEC being the best football conference in America is that in the past five title matchups, they have beaten whoever they have played. Whether it be Florida, Alabama, Auburn, or LSU, the SEC has dominated the other conferences. The SEC would be proving nothing to anyone by beating itself in the title game.
Additionally, people would hate it. I would hate it. I don't want to see another LSU-'Bama, but I would love to see another Auburn-Oregon. It's much more exciting to view two teams that hadn't lost all season and had everything on the line than to watch a matchup of two rivals who already played this year.
This whole idea behind embracing a rematch is just completely out-of-the-park ridiculous. It also creates the possibility of having Alabama win that game and end the season with both teams having one loss to the other. LSU would argue that they deserve it just as much as 'Bama does, and I can agree with them that they would lay just as much claim to the trophy as the Tide.
The entire idea of this makes me sick. I'm all for watching the "Game of the Century," but seeing it twice in one year is over doing it. It destroys the image of college football and its attempted fairness while giving us, the fans, nothing new to watch in the title game.
The game last night was amazing, but please don't make me watch it again.
