2011 Breeders' Cup Results: Drosselmeyer Won't Maintain Form After Classic Win
Drosselmeyer stormed past a talented group of horses down the stretch to claim the 2011 Breeders' Cup Classic. Favorite Uncle Mo and fellow contenders Havre de Grace, Ruler On Ice, Game On Dude and Flat Out were left in the dust as the long shot charged to victory.
Mike Smith was the winning jockey and said he was confident throughout the race despite some difficult circumstances (via Reuters).
""I know it's kind of hard to say when you're way back there last, but it was kind of Zenyatta-like, as far as the ones that she won. He felt confident. He was in a great rhythm.
"He was breathing. He was doing everything I asked him to do. Going into the far turn, he took a deep breath, and I knew he was loaded again."

While it was an awesome win for trainer William Mott and WinStar Farm LLC, which owns Drosselmeyer, his past performances say the win doesn't guarantee future results.
He's a horse that has always had mixed results. Unlike some of the sport's top names, Drosselmeyer lacks consistency.
He's more of a boom-or-bust contender, as evidenced by his seventh place finish at Saratoga in August.
After today's triumph, he will undoubtedly be overpriced in his next few outings. And there's a strong chance at least one of them will be a dud, so the smart money will be on the second-tier choices in Drosselmeyer's upcoming starts.
However, his owners will gladly accept a couple inconsistent outings after winning the richest race in North America. The talent is undeniable, but everybody knew that before the Classic, getting him to do it more often for as longs he continues to race will be the key for Mott.
On Breeders' Cup Saturday, though, Drosselmeyer was king.
