LSU vs. Alabama: Why Loser Will Still Be Alive for National Title Contention

Justin WeltonNov 6, 2011

Why shouldn’t the loser of the “Game of the Century” have a legitimate shot at making it to the BCS National Championship Game? There is a reason why these two teams are in this game, right?

LSU or Alabama may have a legitimate argument if Oklahoma State loses one of their games.

The SEC is one of the best conferences in the nation with the past five national champions residing from their league.

If LSU loses, they will only fall a couple of spots, plus they will have the advantage on Oregon because they defeated them 40-27 in the season opener.

They should drop below Oklahoma State and that’s it. Their schedule, talent level and victories in 2011 should be good enough to keep them above Boise State and possibly even Stanford in the rankings.

If they aren’t, then it will only be a matter of time. How many times do we see a team jump Boise State in the rankings? It seems to happen every year because of the lack of schedule strength for the Broncos. Given the teams remaining on the schedule, the Tigers or Crimson Tide could be sitting at the No. 3 spot.

What about Stanford?

They currently sit at No. 4 in the rankings. They too have a huge showdown next weekend against Oregon. If Oregon wins, it would only help the Tigers out in the chase for second place.

All LSU would need to have happen is Oklahoma State getting upset. As great as they are playing right now, Mike Gundy and company have not been in a tight spot like this. They will definitely start to feel the pressure when they see their name at No. 2.

With Oklahoma at home and tricky road tests at Texas Tech and Iowa State, it is easy to believe that maybe their offense will have a poor game and their defense will give up a ton of points causing them to fall for the first time in 2011.

This would open the door for LSU or Alabama to take control of the second position. How great would a rematch be? It’s possible. Maybe even more than it seems. Remember we are talking about computers in the end of everything. Who knows what will happen.
