LSU Defeats Alabama: 5 Things We Learned from SEC Game of the Century

Joe PenkalaNov 5, 2011

With the game of the century now over, LSU has taken another step towards a national title, finding a way to take Alabama and Nick Saban down on the road.

While the game did deliver and was a great battle of two evenly-matched teams, many things came to light in the faceoff.

Here is a look at five things we learned from the game of the century.

The Defenses Were as Good as Advertised

1 of 5

One thing that goes without question is the fact the defenses lived up their respective billing.

Both teams found ways to force turnovers, make plays, and ultimately, come up with big stops to force overtime.

Regardless of the result, both teams know they have a defense capable of carrying the team the rest of the way.

LSU Does Have Issues at Quarterback

2 of 5

While the Tigers did pull out the win, it is clear LSU still has questions at quarterback.

Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson went back and forth Saturday night, but once Lee threw two picks, Jefferson was given the ball the rest of the way.

It will be interesting to see how Les Miles now handles this situation. Lee has been steady all year long, but it was Jefferson who ultimately got the call in overtime.

Alabama Has Issues in the Kicking Game

3 of 5

Alabama is going to be kicking themselves for the issues they had in the kicking game. In the game of the century, Alabama missed four field goals (including a blocked FG).

Early on, Alabama was able to successfully move the ball into LSU territory, but once they were forced into kicking situations, things could not have gone rougher.

The Tide must do their best to shore up their kicking game in case they find themselves in a similar situation and game in the near future.

Les Miles Always Seems to Have One Second Left

4 of 5

With the first half closing to an end, LSU ran a play leaving one second left for a field goal opportunity.

Over his career at LSU, Miles has been involved in some interesting clock management positions, and it was interesting to see him come out ahead one more time.

LSU Controls Their Destiny

5 of 5

With this win, LSU controls their own destiny and ability to not only appear in the SEC title game but also the national championship.

Remaining on the schedule for LSU is Western Kentucky, Ole Miss and Arkansas. With the No. 1 tag firmly placed on LSU, the Tigers know that winning out would virtually guarantee a shot at the BCS championship.
