LSU vs. Alabama: Key Matchups to Keep an Eye On
No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama face off this evening in what is being called the "Game of the Century".
I'm not sure I would consider the game the best of the century, but we are all in store for one of the best matchups that college football could give us in regular season play.
Many believe that this is the equivalent of what should be the future National Championship Game.
All week we have been breaking down the matchup, taking a look at what and who will make a difference in the outcome of the game.
Here are the three biggest matchups to keep an eye on.
Nick Saban vs. Les Miles
The first matchup is pretty self-explanatory. This showdown comes down to two of the best coaches in college football.
Nick Saban is known for his more conservative play-calling techniques. He looks to capitalize on opponent's mistakes and has his team play sound football.
Les Miles is the exact opposite. He is willing to take chances and make aggressive calls that have a huge impact on the outcome of games.
Both have similar game plans, relying on the run game and stout defense. The difference will come when big decisions need to be made with the game on the line.
Tyrann Mathieu vs. Marquis Maze
Marquis Maze is the primary receiver for the Crimson Tide offense. He will have a heck of a time getting open this week against the best cornerback in the country.
Tyrann Mathieu, also known as the Honey Badger, has established himself as a top-tier player in college football.
For what he lacks in size, he makes up for in tenacity and energy. That's how he earned the nickname Honey Badger.
Maze has 39 catches for 489 yards and a touchdown this season. That's over double what the next receiver on the team has totaled.
He will have to be on his game tonight.
Kevin Minter vs. Trent Richardson
This matchup is likely going to be the big one that dictates the outcome of the game.
On one side we have Heisman Trophy hopeful Trent Richardson for the Tide. Richardson has gashed opposing defenses for 989 yards on a 6.6 average and 17 touchdowns already this year.
Those totals include a dominating performance against two of the top ranked defense in college football in Penn State and Florida.
It will be Mike linebacker Kevin Minter who will try to hold Richardson to a quiet performance tonight.
If Richardson is held early then pressure will be on quarterback A.J. McCarron to keep Alabama in the game. That's the key to success for LSU.
However, if Richardson can open things up, they could find themselves in control of their destiny for the remainder of the season.
