Pacquiao vs Marquez: Appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Will Be Good Luck for Pac-Man

Andrew KulhaNov 5, 2011

Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers of all time, but perhaps he's getting a little extra help on the side from a very unlikely source.

Pacquiao has been linked to a number of suspicious thoughts, but this latest theory is just plain off the wall.

Pacquiao is known for his thunderous right hand, but how many people know that he's also known for his singing ability?

That's right: Pacquiao is actually quite the prolific singer, to the point where he actually has a career in the Philippines as one.

Granted, he is known far more because of his boxing, but even the fact that he can carry a tune is quite impressive.

Here in the States, not many people see Pacquiao as more than a fighter, but there is one person who can see the deeper side of him.

Popular late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel seems to understand the hidden talent of Pacquiao, according to a very entertaining piece by Greg Beacham of the Associated Press:

"

Manny Pacquiao is taking a beating in the center of this ring. He barely knows a word of this Bee Gees song, which is a bit too high and complicated for his singing skills, and he's struggling to read the lyrics off the cue cards—probably because he's wearing sunglasses in a dark studio.

Nobody at Thursday's rehearsal for "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is even slightly worried. The pure absurdity of boxing's pound-for-pound champion earnestly singing "How Deep Is Your Love" is great television, which is what the ABC talk show gets every time Pacquiao visits.

"Each time you've been here, you've won the fight," Kimmel says during their interview two hours later. "I feel like we're a team, really."

Pacquiao has made five appearances on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," promoting his pay-per-view bouts and winning over the Hollywood crowds with the same quiet charisma that helped put him in Congress in his native Philippines. After Kimmel prods and teases him through an interview, Pacquiao punctuates each appearance with a song—his duet with Will Ferrell got 1.5 million hits on YouTube the last time out.

"

Perhaps Kimmel is on to something. Perhaps he really is good luck.

In reality, I'm sure Kimmel has nothing to do with Pacquiao's luck in the ring, but I do think that he does point to a deeper side of the fighter.

Pacquiao is lighthearted, fun and extremely talented, and those appearances on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" are one of the ways that he allows us to see that side of him.

I believe that it's a side of him that actually helps in the ring.

Going into this bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao will be loose and ready to go, and it's that calmness that gives him such an advantage over his opponents.

As a fighter, being relaxed before your throws adds such an explosiveness to the punch, and that is undoubtedly one of the reasons Pacquiao's right hand is so revered.

Perhaps Kimmel isn't a good luck charm, but he may just be an avenue to help Pacquiao prepare for his fights.

Is this a crazy theory? Of course. But then again, the record doesn't lie.
