2011 Breeders Cup: Breaking Down the Best of Saturday's Races

Michael MillNov 4, 2011

The second day of the 2011 Breeders Cup features nine races over the course of Saturday afternoon and evening.

Most of these races are the more anticipated ones during the event, including the final classic race to conclude the evening.

Here is a breakdown of the events that will unfold during the second day of the Breeders Cup.

Race 1: Marathon

Distance: 1.75 Miles, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $500,000

The first race on Saturday will be one of the most memorable from a year ago. Last year, a fight after the race between jockeys stole the limelight. Calvin Borel and Javier Castellano are back to race again this year. Hopefully, this time around most of the action will happen on the track.

Race 2: Juvenile Turf

Distance: 1 Mile, Restrictions: 2-Year-Old Colts & Geldings, Purse: $1,000,000

Last year, trainer Todd Pletcher absolutely crushed the competition in the Juvenile races. He won three of the four races he competed in, and he placed in the fourth. He will take the track with Finale, a colt that has won three straight races on grass.

Race 3: Dirt Sprint

Distance: 6 Furlongs, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $2,000,000

The Dirt Sprint is one of the less popular events this year due to the lack of competition amongst the entries. Last year the event did provide a great story with jockey Eibar Coa riding Big Drama to a win after returning from a riding accident.

Race 4: Turf Sprint

Distance: 5 Furlongs, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $1,000,000

Chamberlain Bridge, the winner of the event last year, is off to a rough start in 2011. He has lost his last four events. However, he has a career-record four wins in six starts on the course. This could be the rebound needed for Chamberlain Bridge to get back on course.

Race 5: Juvenile Dirt

Distance: 1.06 Miles, Restrictions: 2-Year-Old Colts & Geldings, Purse: $1,000,000

Last year's winner of the Juvenile Dirt race was Uncle Mo, who is now one of the favorites in the Classic race to finish up the Breeders Cup. There are no big-name horses that are being talked about in this one, but maybe one can emerge like Uncle Mo did.

Race 6: Turf Mile

Distance: 1 Mile, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $2,000,000

Nobody has ever won a Breeders' Cup four years in a row. This year, Goldikova returns to the Turf Mile race hoping to change history. Goldikova has finished in the top two in 20 of her 23 turf starts.

Race 7: Dirt Mile

Distance: 1 Mile, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $1,000,000

The Dirt Mile has only been a part of the event since 2007. No horse has ever won more than once, and that trend will continue. No jockey has ever won more than once, but that could change. Joel Rosario, Julien Leparoux and Kent Desormeaux will all be jockeys in the event.

Race 8: Turf

Distance: 1.5 Miles, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $3,000,000

The Turf race may have the deepest field in all the races. Sarafina is the early favorite over Midday, who won the filly race in 2009.

Race 9: Classic

Distance: 1.25 Miles, Restrictions: 3+ Years, Purse: $5,000,000

The Classic will be the final race of the two days of championship racing. The race will very likely decide which horse wins the title of Horse of the Year. The two big favorites are Uncle Mo and Havre de Grace.
