Larry Fitzgerald's Twitter Fight Against Breast Cancer

Tim HarveyNov 4, 2011

We all know Larry Fitzgerald: No. 11, wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. He's a star player and worthy No. 3 draft choice, who has been loyal to his side since his 2004 inception into the NFL.

Fitzgerald is a game changer and already ranked fourth all-time in NFL history in the category of receiving yards per game. He is more than all these great attributes and accomplishments, though. He's a gifted young athlete with grace and humility.  Fitzgerald is also a generous man, who is looking out for more than just himself and his own star power.

In 2003, a year before this young legend-in-the-making entered the league, his mother tragically died of a brain hemorrhage at the young age of 47, after a courageous seven-and-a-half year battle with breast cancer. Now, in the name of his mother and millions of other sufferers, Mrs. Fitzgerald's son is continuing her fight. The future of breast cancer research is in the 'sticky fingers' of the safest hands in the NFL.

In order to help fight the disease, the Cardinals receiver has donated $1,000 per catch and $10,000 per touchdown for the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness month) to go along with $.10 toward the cause for every new follower he gets on Twitter. Now with important, influential generosity like this, this man deserves to be the most followed and trended man on Twitter. More than the Bieber's, Gaga's and LeBron's.

Check this out. After the first hour of the announcements, Fitzgerald was king, going from 935,210 followers to 936,660, which raised $145 for the cause in just 60 minutes and ultimately raised a huge $15,000 to go along with his $19,000 pledged from 19 catches. His followers have now passed the million mark—1,047,175.

Now that is one trend that really does mean something. Forget your Kardashians or 'my ex says this' hash tags. This is real talk and a real reason to spread the word.

This goes beyond the sport of American football and to the support of good people to a great man. Everyone on Twitter should follow Larry Fitzgerald, fan or not. This is more than sport loyalty, it's devotion to the right thing. If you haven't already, we should all offer something to a man who's giving really does go beyond receiving and join this million marching band of followers out for his cause.

Fitzgerald has now caught his most legendary passes and started a social network revolution that should be televised, broadcast, written about, blogged, shared and talked about. Who else in sports and entertainment would drop $34,000 like it was nothing?

Everyone reading this should tell a friend and follow Larry like the pied piper, or one of his hapless defenders, in order to pipe more awareness into this cause.

AT&T is also getting on the cause, pledging that for every 4G smartphone bought in Arizona they will donate $5 to Fitzgerald's First Down Fund, which helps youths. What Fitzgerald is doing is incredible, inspiring and influential. It's more than the money.

Mrs. Fitzgerald may not have been able to see her son enter the league, but she must be so proud.
