Week 9 Fantasy Football Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Fringe QBs Who Get the Green Light

Zachary D. RymerNov 4, 2011

Before we get down to brass tacks, I have a funny story to tell.

So even I forget to check my fantasy roster sometimes, and I just remembered that Matthew Stafford has a bye. And who's the only guy on the waiver wire I can possibly replace him with?

John Skelton.

Yup, I'm losing this weekend. I should have hit the waiver wire earlier. Maybe I could have nabbed one of the guys listed below. They're definitely on the fringe between roster-worthy and fantasy garbage, but I think they'll do well this weekend.

Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

Let's kick this list off with Andy "Daywalker" Dalton. He's really nothing special as a fantasy quarterback, and you're likely going to have to live with an interception from him each week, but you could certainly do worse.

Dalton and the Bengals will be taking on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. They have respectable numbers against opposing passers, but you have to think that Cedric Benson's return to the lineup will only help Dalton. With a bit of luck, maybe he'll accomplish half of what Ben Roethlisberger did against the Titans in Week 5.

That, for the record, was 228 yards passing and five touchdowns.

Tarvaris Jackson, Seattle Seahawks

Because he's Tarvaris Jackson, I never expect Tarvaris Jackson to do anything noteworthy.

But to my surprise, Jackson passed for over 300 yards against the Bengals in Week 8, which is pretty significant seeing as how the Bengals came into the game with a top-five pass defense.

This Sunday, Jackson will take aim at the Dallas Cowboys. They're pretty good against the pass, but not invulnerable. If Marshawn Lynch struggles (and he will), Jackson is going to get plenty of throws. At the very least, I expect another good yardage total.

Don't Know If Troll, Or...Tweet:

Carson Palmer, Oakland Raiders

Carson Palmer's Raiders debut was a disaster, but you have to forgive him for that seeing as how he'd only had about five minutes to get ready.

Thanks to Oakland's Week 8 bye, Palmer has had two weeks to prepare for the Denver Broncos, so I'm going to assume he can only be better. What will help is the fact that the Broncos have been very generous to opposing quarterbacks this season. They have just two picks all season, and have allowed multiple touchdown passes in four of their seven games.

Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos

Listen, I don't think he'll ever amount to a good NFL quarterback either, but the fact is that Tim Tebow is actually a pretty decent fantasy quarterback.

There are two reasons for this. The first is that completion percentage doesn't matter in fantasy. The second is that Tebow gets those invaluable rushing yards. He's also generally good for at least one touchdown per week.

For what it's worth, the Raiders have been very kind to quarterbacks this year. In fact, Matt Cassel broke a streak in Week 7 that had the Raiders allowing multiple touchdown passes in five straight weeks.

So my advice is to start Tebow. His fantasy output will mask how horrible he is.
