Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Mayweather Distraction Won't Keep Pacquiao from Victory
Today has potential to go down as a great day for boxing fans everywhere.
Colin Linneweber of the Boston Boxing Examiner was one person to report that Floyd Mayweather has his eyes set on a May 5 date vs. Manny Pacquiao.
Linneweber quoted Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe:
"We're looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella. Floyd made it very clear that he wants to give the fans the biggest fights that are out there. He wants to stay active...We're going to do everything in our power to make the biggest fight out there for the fans and we all know what the fight is.
"
If this ends up coming to fruition, boxing fans will get the dream match between Mayweather and Pacquiao, and May's not that far away.
However, there is one problem with looking ahead to May, at least for Pacquiao. That problem is not a small one.
Pacquiao has a date with a rather tough opponent in less than two weeks. Yes, Juan Manuel Marquez has given Pacquiao two exceptionally challenging fights and is dead set on evening the score with his rival.
So, Pacquiao can't look ahead to Mayweather—that's our job.
The good news for Pacquiao and his fans is that his focus is incredible. There is no valid reason to think he'll just look ahead to Mayweather and overlook Marquez.
In all honesty, that would be a more legitimate concern if he had never fought Marquez, or fought him and handily defeated him in the past. However, Pacquiao knows that Marquez is capable of. Thinking that today's Mayweather news will force Pacquiao to look beyond Marquez is completely baseless.
This will be a tough fight, but I like Pacquiao to win it. He'll finally put Marquez in his rear view mirror and win with a unanimous decision, if not better.
At that point, the hype will be on. Again, May's not that far away, but if that fight actually ends up happening, it will feel like an eternity.
