Yankees At It Again—Ink Burnett For Five Years

Micheal RobinsonDec 12, 2008

Fox Sports and ESPN have reported that the Yankees and A.J. Burnett have agreed to a five-year, $82.5 million contract.  This coming just a few days after CC Sabathia was added to the rotation.

The soon-to-be 32-year-old has made just 30 starts twice in his career, both times in contract years. Of course, he is a legitimate No. 2 starter when he's healthy, and the Yankees should be able to cover his absences fairly well.

He was one of the players the Yankees didn't enjoy facing, being a division rival, they played him quite often.

The Atlanta Braves wanted Burnett in their rotation, most likely as their number one starter but their pockets aren't as deep as the ones in New York.

So now you have Sabathia, Wang and Burnett at the top of the rotation and that is the way its going to be, its after that that Yankee fans are unsure about.

Joba Chamberlain should be in the rotation to start the year off but the Yankees are waiting on Andy Pettitte to figure out what he is going to do as well.

Pettitte is contemplating Yankees or retirement most say, but is looking for a little bit more then the $10M the Yankees are offering and something more close to the $16M he made each of the past two seasons.

Phillip Hughes or Ian Kennedy could control the final spot but if Pettitte signs and Chamberlain is in the rotation, that won't be necessary.

This is a huge pick up for the Yankees no doubt and one begs to wonder if this is it for the offseason.  Swisher, Sabathia, Cameron, Burnett, are they done?  Time will tell.

Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez are still floating around, have the Yankees got the cash to bring in another big name?

The Yankees are not messing around, anything can happen at this point.
