Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez: 10 Fights That Could Be Next

Justin TateNov 2, 2011

Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO) and Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KO) do battle on November 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but what happens on November 13th?

Most of the questions about his fight have to do with who is going to win on that Saturday night that will be shown on HBO pay-per-view, but what about the meetings and discussions to negotiate the next fight?

Depending on who wins and the result, this could turn out quite a few ways and an almost infinite number of possibilities could take place. Here are the 10 most likely of those infinite possibilities.

10. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Joel Casamayor II

1 of 10

Joel Casamayor (38-5-1, 22 KO) is 40 years old and scheduled to face Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO) on the undercard of Pacquiao vs Marquez, but he's still crafty enough to pull off the upset if underestimated.

Should Marquez and Casamayor upset their betting favorite opponents, they could face each other in a rematch of their 2008 barnburner that was razor-thin close until Marquez scored an 11th-round knockout.

Even if both fighters lose, Marquez and Casamayor could fight each other in a decent retirement farewell fight to the fans they've please with two decades of skilled action-packed fights.

9. Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez IV

2 of 10

When Marquez met Pacquiao at featherweight (126 lbs) in 2004, they fought to a hotly debated draw despite Pacquiao knocking Marquez down three times.

Pacquiao improved as a fighter and Marquez grew older four years later when they met at super featherweight (130 lbs) in 2008.

Pacquiao still only managed an ultra-close split decision victory mostly thanks to the one knockdown he managed to score against Marquez.

If this trend continues, it's possible that even now at three years later at multiple divisions higher (welterweight, 147 lbs), Marquez might avoid getting knocked down and win this thing or score a draw.

Either way, that would be an upset that Pacquiao would want to immediately corrected, hence the rematch clause placed in the contract to this fight.

8. Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley

3 of 10

Last year, Timothy Bradley debuted at the welterweight division against an undefeated Luis Abregu (29-1, 23 KO), handing him his first loss by unanimous decision.

Bradley has since beaten another undefeated fighter, Devon Alexander (22-1, 13 KO) before jumping from former promoter Gary Shaw to the more welcoming Top Rank brand that hosts the likes of Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs).

Rumors have run rampant that Bradley is being lined up to face Pacquiao next. Pacquiao needs to beat Marquez and Bradley has to be very impressive and maybe even stop Casamayor to prove he can beat Pacquiao.

7. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Erik Morales

4 of 10

Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KO) proved earlier this year that sometimes winning isn't everything. Occasionally a loss can really be seen as a win.

When 34-year-old Morales stepped into the ring against 27-year-old hard-hitting Marcos Maidana (31-2, 27 KO), many expected the legend to be destroyed for fighting past his better years.

Morales proved in the ring to be more formidable than people originally believed, and though he dropped a majority decision to Maidana, he fought bravely and intelligently with enough heart and ring smarts to trouble his younger foe.

In a rematch, Morales would be given a much better chance than initially given. Marquez is in a similar boat. Even if he doesn't win, Marquez will get the credit for trying and a fight between two all-action Mexican superstars will be truly an epic conclusion to two epic careers.

6. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Timothy Bradley

5 of 10

If Pacquiao should beat Marquez or Marquez doesn't want to immediately go into a fourth fight with Pacquiao to defend the welterweight world title, Bradley is one of the best choices.

Bradley's slick, yet engaging with his whirlwind style. He doesn't have the greatest power in his class of new-age fighters, but he does have a lot of ring smarts and ambition. Marquez could put that to the test.

5. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Amir Khan

6 of 10

Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO) is a 24-year-old British fighter with vast potential, yet he's ran out of opponents at the junior welterweight level. So he plans to move up to welterweight in 2012.

Should Marquez best Pacquiao or show he's a least decent at the welterweight level, Marquez could be a good test for Khan.

4. Manny Pacquiao vs Amir Khan

7 of 10

Khan is fast rising and Pacquiao seems to be staying at the top. Though Khan wants Mayweather at welterweight, Pacquiao and Khan facing each other has been on Freddie Roach's mind.

Roach is their training and they are both sparring partners. Roach has even gone so far as to call them brothers. But Pacquiao is a man of the people and Khan equally likes to please his growing fanbase.

As the chants for the two of them to fight grow louder, the idea of a Pacquiao-Khan fight becomes a step closer to reality.

3. Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto II

8 of 10

Cotto and Pacquiao squared off two years ago, but Cotto is set to avenge his first loss to Margarito in December.

If Cotto can accomplish the task and look good doing so, he may start hype from his fans to see him avenge his defeat to Pacquiao.

2. Manny Pacquiao vs Mike Jones

9 of 10

Mike Jones (25-0, 18 KO) has a fight scheduled to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF welterweight world championship and he's one of the hottest welterweight prospects around.

He's undefeated and beating progressively better competition. With slickness and power in hand, he could pose problems for Pacquiao or at least be sold to the public as an opponent that can cause problems.

1. Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.

10 of 10

Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO) is Pacquiao's biggest rival in every way. He's the biggest pay-per-view star Pacquiao could face. He's the most skilled athlete in his division as well as the most accomplished.

A win over Mayweather ends the debate over who is the best fighter of this era...period. Assuming Pacquiao defeats Marquez, the hype would be back on for him to engage Mayweather in negotiations.

With Mayweather turning 35 next year and Pacquiao turning 33 by the end of this year, if this fight doesn't happen next for both fighters in 2012, then they will very likely will never face each other in this lifetime.
