Brazilian Football: Ronaldo Comeback, New Kaka, Sao Paulo Hat-trick and More...

Brazilian Football by SBDec 11, 2008

Well let`s get things going with Internacional of Porto Alegre. The Colorado—or Inter—who boast a tremendous youth program and 11 World Cup winning players who have worn their bright red uniforms, won yet another title—the Copa Sudamericana.

Inter beat Estudiantes 2-1 on aggregate to win this cup adding to their past glories which include a world title versus Ronaldinho's Barcelona in 2006.

Ronaldinho's ex-club Gremio were quick to dismiss the Copa Sudamericana as a second rate tournament, as Gremio could do no better than second in the Brazilian Championship this year. This tournament went right down to the wire last Sunday as Sao Paulo secured a draw and the title at the new Bezerrao stadium—which some of you may remember was the venue for the recent 6-2 Brazil Portugal drubbing.

Yes that's right—I can’t seem to stop talking about that.

For their part, Sao Paulo achieved an enviable feat in racking up three Brazilian Championships in a row with the same coach—Muricy Ramalho. It's Sao Paulo's sixth title in all and the hat-trick record should stand for many years.

Sao Paulo, just like their Porto Alegre counterparts are also famous for their youth program, fielding a record 11 players in their first side this year from this source. Rumour has it that the makers of Juninho, Denilson, Adriano, Luis Fabiano, and Kaka have done it again and a new Kaka called Oscar is just around the corner.

However some time ago Gremio also claimed to have a new Ronaldinho called Anderson—so hold on to your checkbooks in Europe just a bit longer please. Let's see him play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world first.

Finally some news about a transfer causing some uproar—32-year-old Ronaldo has decided to abandon the Gavia (Flamengo) where he had been training for the last four months for a move to Parque Sao Jorge (Corinthians).

This former club world champion has only just returned to the Brazilian first division and is hungry to reestablish its credibility. Some have rumoured that Ronaldo, for his part, is looking to use Corinthians as a springboard to return to big earnings in Europe much like Adriano did last year at Sao Paulo, eventually luring Mourinho to Brazil to make his offer and pave the way back to Italian football, Champions League, bars, nightlife, and what have you.

Ronaldo, however, denies the allegations of European career aspirations and claims to intend on staying at Corinthians. An international match versus Argentine rivals Boca Juniors is being discussed to herald his return.

The Rio club had high hopes of a Ronaldo return playing at Flamengo and reports are that there was some sorrow upon his departure. As one Flamengo official put it—"he left without a thank you or goodbye."
