Week 9 Waiver Wire: 3 Available Players You're Better off Avoiding

Andrea HangstNov 1, 2011

One good game does not a fantasy must-add make; a savvy fantasy football GM has to be able to tell the difference between a true breakout performance and a one-week anomaly. But, if you need help to that end, you're in luck: Here are three players who you should avoid adding, regardless of your needs and regardless of how tempting they may be.

TE Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. Chicago Bears)

Brent Celek had an impressive showing, likely his only for the season, against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, and that mainly came from Dallas not covering the middle of the field, leaving him attractively wide open for quarterback Michael Vick's passes.

In that game, Celek had seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown; in contrast, in his previous six games this season, he's had just 13 total catches for 115 yards and a single score, a far cry from his studly 2009 season in which he caught 76 passes for 971 yards and eight touchdowns.

With Vick at quarterback and with a number of receivers available to catch his passes, Celek has been relegated to being a blocker way more often than he is a receiver.

Don't let his Week 8 performance deceive you—it was one-off. Should you add him to your fantasy roster in hopes he will repeat his showing against the Bears this week, you'll only be disappointed.

WR Patrick Crayton, San Diego Chargers (vs. Green Bay Packers)

While Patrick Crayton had his best game of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8, catching three passes for 50 yards, that shouldn't be a convincing enough argument for you to consider adding him to your fantasy football roster.

After his Week 3 performance, again against the Chiefs (his first game of the season), in which he had five catches for 47 yards, he followed it up with three games in which he caught a total of three passes for 16 yards.

He's clearly not a favored target of quarterback Philip Rivers, and though it seems attractive to snag him for a Week 9 spot-start versus a Green Bay Packers team the Chargers are going to look to match pass-for-pass, it's better if you keep him on the waiver wire where he belongs.

RB Tashard Choice, Washington Redskins (vs. San Francisco 49ers)

The newly-acquired Tashard Choice won't be active against the San Francisco 49ers this week, as he's still healing from a hamstring he pulled while a Dallas Cowboy, but you should reject the temptation to add him and stash him on your bench.

Three words should tip you off as to why he's not a smart add: Redskins running back. Though starter Tim Hightower is out for the season, most any team might be comfortable with a committee approach with the two remaining backs, Ryan Torain and Roy Helu.

Not so for head coach Mike Shanahan, whose approach to managing running backs is as hard to decipher as which of the hundreds of "this guy's" Jon Gruden is referring to on Monday night. Torain and Helu struggled in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills, though Helu didn't touch the ball once despite being on the field for more snaps than Torain.

This means one can never really figure out what Shanahan's plans for the position are moving forward. It's better to save yourself the inevitable headache that would come from rostering Choice and finding a better, more consistent waiver wire back if you're in real need.
